Recap Wonder Man (2026): S1E05 – “Found Footage”
Episode six of Wonder Man opens with Trevor and Simon at the Power House Bar, talking about the incredible odds they got a callback for the movie. Thousands of people tried out for the role, but they got the callback. He insists he can’t enjoy it because it means “everything” to him. When he says he should be in the gym or running lines, Trevor helps him relax using Box Breathing techniques. Slattery gets a call from Agent Cleary but ignores it, saying it’s a friend from a pocket dimension he used to live in. This is an Easter egg from Shang-Chi when he was in the village of Ta Lo.
Meanwhile, Cleary is getting increasingly frustrated by the lack of communication. But when Deputy Secretary Heyerdahl comes in, he lies and says he’s making “lots of progress.” The director gives a subtle reminder that he might get fired. No pressure.
Back at the bar, someone buys them drinks. Slattery thinks it’s a co-star, but he’s actually a former drug dealer he owes money to named Patrick Connor. The guy takes them into an alley out back and starts beating them up. In a fit of rage, Simon uses his super strength to throw them into walls and across the alley floor. This is the first time we see that he has strength in addition to his energy powers.
Unfortunately, they see a delivery driver watching with a GoPro camera on. When they try to talk to the guy, he takes off. Trevor asks if he has super speed, but Williams decides to chase the bike using his car. Traffic is heavy, and Slattery keeps dodging phone calls from “her.” Finally, Simon takes the car onto the sidewalk. We know he’s reckless, but this is insane.
Superpowers Revealed and a Risky Deal
They’re increasingly frustrated, but then Simon’s agent sends them pages from the script. Funnily, they get distracted by the intensity and twists in the scene when Barnaby betrays Wonder Man. Incredulously, they talk about the moving scene, forgetting about the camera footage for a moment. Surprisingly, they turn and see the driver waiting for them.
He leads them to a secret club, which Slattery says they should remember. The driver, Jayden, says he saw what happened and wants their help. He’s vague about the details, but says that Esteban stole his motorcycle. He’ll give them the video if they get it back. If they don’t, then the video will automatically upload to YouTube. Slattery says the guy is “clearly untrustworthy,” but Simon is desperate enough to do it.
The next morning, they go to a “bagging party” at Esteban’s house. He says they’re going to pretend to be cops from Law & Order (season 14, “Can I Get a Witness?” directed by Don Scardino).
However, as soon as the door is opened, the woman recognizes Slattery as the Mandarin. She excitedly invites them in to meet Esteban, who says they used to scare each other as kids, doing impressions of the terrorist. He quotes my favorite line from Iron Man 3 to show how invested he is.
Williams asks for the motorcycle, saying he’ll call the cops. Esteban points out they’re selling homemade chamoy, or Mexican candy. The “bagging party” is seasoning fruit with spices to sell. After tasting a seasoned peach ring, Trevor says he understands. He also reveals that Jayden used to be his partner making candy, and they had a falling out. Simon still needs the bike, but Trevor, who never liked Jayden anyway, is now on Esteban’s side.
Mandarin Mayhem, Police Chaos, and a Wild Escape
At the same time, while they’re planning a viral “Mandarin’s Mandarins” video, Connor and his men follow Simon’s car. He threatens to kill the delivery driver if they don’t come out of the house.
As Jayden begs for his life, the British actor confirms that a GoPro can’t upload a video to YouTube on its own. In an act of desperation, Jayden shoves the camera through the mail slot, and one of Esteban’s friends deletes the video. In the middle of the chaos, who should call but Janelle? She has amazingly bad timing.
Simon tries to get off the phone, but his agent tells him the Wonder Man director, Von Kovak, is having the audition now at his house. Because 911 is not a joke, the police surround the house and tell Connor to drop his weapon. As everyone flees the house, dodging gunfire, Trevor and Simon jump into the car. They’re so flustered that Slattery ends up driving. Since we can assume he’s driven drunk at least once, he probably doesn’t have a license.
They race away as the credits roll to the song “Superman” by the Commodores. The song is about the baddest, baddest, baddest man in town. Considering they’re fleeing the police, it’s a fitting song. Plus, he compares himself to a superhero who’s faster than a speeding bullet and can jump buildings in a single bound. It’s a deep cut.
