Review: Space Ghost Vol. 2 (2026) #8
The story begins with a flashback with Dr. Henry Contra and his grandchildren, Jan and Jace. Then it cuts to modern day as the Antimatter Man is building a reactor to give him more power. Dax / Space Ghost tries to stop him, but is overwhelmed by the villain’s antimatter-infected minions. The three end up working with a band of scientists to defeat him and free Dr. Contra.
Writing Style and Readability of Space Ghost Vol. 2
This issue of Space Ghost moves very quickly. The pace is perfectly developed and full of action. Thanks to Jonathan Lau’s outstanding artwork, Dax is thick, muscular, and powerful. Plus, he comes up with clever ways to solve problems.
Immersive World-Building and Atmosphere
Considering this is based on a cheesy cartoon series from the 1960s, this comic is brilliantly done. Every aspect of the animated series is fully realized in original ways. The villains feel genuinely terrifying, and the galaxy is full of lively characters.
Character Development and Plot Intricacy in Space Ghost Vol. 2
This conflict is mainly from Jan and Jace’s grandfather, Contra. He’s their last surviving relative, and his scientific prowess ultimately brought about his demise. In this chapter, Pepose examines the “Antimatter Man” as a warning against ambition and the tainting of a legacy, as well as his physical threat to the galaxy. Given that we’ve been following this particular family dynamic since the first issue, Pepose’s setup is excellent and makes Contra’s change feel more powerful.
The battle between Space Ghost and his team and Contrwhena and his army gives the story its power. But it’s the agony of Jan and Jace’s revelation that gives the story its true weight. It’s gutwrenching when they face the reality that the monster they’ve been battling is the same man who introduced them to the glories of the cosmos. Here, artist Jonathan Lau really brings out the emotions and heartache conveyed through Jan’s facial expressions.
Overall: Buy Space Ghost #8
Volume 2 of Space Ghost, which has been one of the best-reviewed comic books for the past year, had another fantastic installment. The creative team keeps getting better, and with the emotional story’s added pathos, they seem to have a ton of fresh ideas for how to approach the title.
