Starfleet Academy's Rotten Tomatoes Popcorn Meter is Wildly Different from Critic Score

Not every Star Trek series needs to reinvent warp drive. Sometimes, fans just want a fun, fast-moving show that’s easy to enjoy. That’s where the Starfleet Academy Popcorn Meter comes in—an audience-first way to judge whether the latest Trek entry is worth your time, snacks included.

What is Starfleet Academy’s Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score?

Right now, Rotten Tomatoes gives Star Trek Starfleet Academy a Critic Score of 85%.  There are 16 Fresh (good) reviews and three Rotten (bad) reviews.

The first six episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy were made available to critics for screening, but the show is already receiving excellent reviews. “Starfleet Academy is everything that Star Trek should be,” writes Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue. “It is fun, new, and what we love about this franchise.”

Starfleet Academy, according to Samantha Nelson of Polygon, is “a worthy entry” into the Star Trek canon, “using established characters to connect it to previous shows while being free to push the Federation’s story far beyond Kirk and Picard’s adventures.”

That means the majority of approved critics rated with an average of 85% posisitve reviews. That’s pretty good. It shows the majority of reviewers enjoyed it.

    What Is the Popcorn Meter?

The Popcornmeter reflects audience sentiment through a popcorn bucket icon, showing the percentage of positive ratings for movies or TV shows. It displays “Verified Ratings” for users with confirmed ticket purchases, while “All” ratings include feedback from all users regardless of verification. Titles with Verified Ratings also present an All score, accessible by clicking the popcorn bucket to toggle between scores.

When less than 60% of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher, a tipped-over popcorn bucket is displayed.

What Is the Starfleet Academy Popcorn Meter?

The Popcorn Meter score is audience-focused rather than critic-driven. It’s usually a good evaluation of bingeability, entertainment, and tempo. Many find it perfect for making decisions without revealing anything. Some feel like it enhances conventional critic reviews

Currently, Starfleet Academy has a score of 35%. That means more than 65% of reviewers rated it less than 3.5 out of 5 stars.

    What is Review Bombing?

A review bomb is an Internet phenomenon where media, such as video games or films, receive a surge of negative user reviews as a reaction to the actions of their creators or distributors, often related to cultural or political concerns rather than the media itself. This typically occurs when the vendor appears unresponsive to direct feedback.

Some people have been complaining about the “Young Adult” focus since the show focuses on young people in Starfleet. The other complaint is that it’s too “woke.” Either way, these complaints have started since the first trailer. So it has little to do with the show. Just the perception of the show.

    Valid Criticisms of Starfleet Academy

The show isn’t perfect. In our reviews, we pointed out the problems with the writing and story.  Star Trek: Starfleet Academy faces criticism for uneven tone, YA-style drama, rushed pacing, shallow character development, and nostalgia-driven storytelling that sometimes sidelines classic Trek themes. All of these are valid concerns when compared with other Star Trek shows.

    But there’s one clear thing.

Is Starfleet Academy Being Review Bombed?

Yes. There are several telltale signs that the show is being hit by trolls.

First, a large number of reviews appear in a short time frame, disproportionate to normal activity. In the case of ST: SA, the Internet Archive shows that there’s a critic score of 84% on January 10th. A few days later, the show had a critic score of 85% and a Popcorn meter of 35% on January 16th. This is the day after the show came out. It’s not a slow rise. It happens immediately.

Second, there is a large gap between expert vs. user scores. Critics and audiences don’t always agree. But to have such a massive difference is statistically impossible. A fifty percent difference? It’s being manipulated in some way.

How Will This Affect Star Trek as a Whole?

A low Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter score could affect *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy* by shaping audience perception and streaming performance. Many viewers rely on audience ratings when deciding whether to watch new *Star Trek* shows, and a poor Popcornmeter can discourage casual fans. Negative scores may also amplify online criticism about writing quality, tone, and franchise direction, dominating social media discussions. This perception can hurt word-of-mouth, reduce engagement on Paramount+, and complicate marketing efforts. Over time, weak audience reception may influence renewal decisions, budget priorities, and creative changes, even if critics’ reviews or long-term fandom response improve.

The Starfleet Academy Popcorn Meter isn’t about nitpicking canon or ranking captains—it’s about enjoyment. Whether you’re a lifelong Trekkie or a casual sci-fi viewer, this score is supposed to help answer one simple question: Is this show fun to watch right now? Right now, it’s being denied that opportunity.

Does the low Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter score reflect genuine audience concerns, or is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy being judged too harshly before it has time to find its footing?
