New Star Wars games are entering a bold new era. With multiple projects in development that span story-driven RPGs, high-speed racers, and genre experiments across console and PC. Headlined by Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, Lucasfilm Games is expanding the galaxy far beyond lightsaber combat alone. Alongside it, titles like Star Wars: Galactic Racer signal a push into fresh gameplay styles while keeping deep ties to established canon.
Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Star Wars games. This includes announced studios, gameplay direction, and why these releases matter for fans heading into 2025 and beyond.
New Star Wars Games to Watch
Star Wars: Galactic Racer
Developers: Lucasfilm Games, Fuse Games, and Secret Mode
Release date: TBA 2026
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X
First is Galactic Racer, a “runs-based” racing game. Players take on the role of Shade, a racer who joins the Galactic League. It’s an underground racing circuit funded by the criminal syndicates of the Outer Rim. You’re up against Kestar, who wants to harness the League’s criminal appeal to increase his own power. Evidently, Sebulba is here too! Is that the Millennium Falcon? Will Han Solo be a racer? We’ll have to wait and see.
Galactic Racer will have a single-player story campaign. In addition, there’ll be a player-versus-player (PVP) option. In fact, users can develop their own repulsorcraft and reputation while competing against other players.
“From the beginning, Star Wars has drawn inspiration from racing culture, from podracing to high-speed chases across the galaxy,” said Douglas Reilly, Lucasfilm Games VP, in a statement. “With Star Wars: Galactic Racer, the team at Fuse Games has captured that spirit and elevated it into a wholly new form of racing adventure. We can’t wait for fans to experience it.”
Even better, you can choose from a variety of repulsorcraft classes, each with unique tactical and handling benefits. That way, you can personalize your build, learn new skills on each run, and become an expert at ruthless takedowns.
We don’t have many details, but we know two locations are the desert of Jakku and snowy Ando Prime.
Star Wars: The Fate of the Old Republic
Developers: Lucasfilm Games, Arcanaut Studios
Release date: TBA
Platforms (Confirmed/Expected): PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and possibly Nintendo Switch.
Next up is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, an obvious spiritual successor to the first, critically acclaimed KotOR games. Casey Hudson, the original KotOR director and former BioWare veteran, is the project lead. Although Hudson has used social media to refute reports that the game might not be released until 2030, the game is still in its early phases of development. With Hudson engaged, there’s no doubt that the wait will be worthwhile.
“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that consisted of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson says. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
With only a glimpse of an unidentified Jedi in the trailer, we don’t yet know much about the plot of Fate of the Old Republic. Though this is far from proven, some people suspect that she might be Bastila Shan, Revan’s wife in the original (now non-canon) KotOR stories. Others note that the title seems to allude to the last conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. This was during Darth Bane’s time and marked the end of the Old Republic era.
Why Do These Games Matter to Fans?
These new Star Wars games matter because they signal a creative reset for the franchise, moving away from safe, repetitive formulas toward ambitious, genre-spanning experiences. With projects like Fate of the Old Republic reviving large-scale, choice-driven storytelling and others experimenting with racing and hybrid gameplay, Lucasfilm Games is betting on variety instead of one-size-fits-all releases.
This approach strengthens the Star Wars brand by attracting different types of players—RPG fans, casual gamers, and longtime lore devotees—while rebuilding confidence in single-player Star Wars titles. More importantly, these games expand the galaxy in meaningful ways, adding new eras, characters, and perspectives that can influence future films, series, and comics rather than simply retreading familiar ground.
It’s a big change from the classic Star Wars games of the past.
