    Recap Pluribus (2025): S1E04 – “Please, Carol”

We open episode four, meeting a self-storage facility manager in Paraguay, who has been barricaded in his storage facility since the event and is becoming increasingly desperate. His attempts to find radio signals for news of other survivors fail, and his food supplies are running out. The infected leave trays of food, but he refuses their jovial help. He’s reduced to breaking into storage lockers and eating dog food.

Then, it’s revealed that this is Manousos Oviedo (Carlos-Manuel Vesga). He answers Carol Sturka’s (Rhea Seehorn) phone call in the last episode. From his perspective, it’s just a random phone call from the Others. But when she curses him out, he realizes it’s another survivor because they don’t use fowl language. He makes a note to find her.

In contrast, seven days after the event, Carol is out and about after visiting Zosia (Karolina Wydra) in the hospital after the explosion. She gets a message from the Other on the radio after stealing a police car. They even offer to get her a car that doesn’t have a breathalyzer car lock. A reminder of her struggles with alcoholism.

When she gets home, the Others have been infuriatingly helpful again. Carol finds they’ve begun repairing her damaged home. She shoos them away after noting that one of the Joined is the Mayor. After a shower and a change of clothes, Carol considers wiping away her notes for a fifth Wycaro book but decides against it. She decides to focus on new insights regarding the Others, which she organizes on the whiteboard. Things like “eager to please,” “can’t kill, and “weirdly honest.”

Carol interrogates a member of the hivemind, Larry, about her books, seeking honest feedback rather than mere praise. She discovers that the members include a stalker she nicknamed “Crazy Moira.” They have strong memories of the Wycaro series since it stopped her from committing suicide. After agreeing to suspend her warnings not to talk about her late partner, she learns the truth. Helen didn’t really like the books but considered them “harmless.” She also never finished reading her latest draft for “Bitter Chrysalis.” This painful truth leads Carol to update her list, reflecting her realization that they’re not just honest. They cannot lie.

Back at the hospital, Zosia’s recovery is progressing slowly, but she can walk when Carol visits. Carol expresses regret for not anticipating the Others’ reaction to her grenade request, leading to Zosia’s injury. She asks some probing questions. She knows the Others have gained some understanding of their Joining. But when she asks Zosia if it can be reversed, she refuses to answer. Carol realizes that Zosia’s silence means it’s because she can’t lie or tell the truth. The truth is out there. There is a way to reverse the effects of the infection.

Despite Zosia’s claims of loving acceptance, Carol feels conflicted about becoming one of the Others. Zosia challenges Carol’s own attempts to change them by questioning her motivations for wanting to reverse the Joining. Unwilling to abandon her mission, she pretends to want heroin (which they’re willing to give her, of course). But she’s actually stealing thiopental sodium (truth serum) and needles from the hospital. She wants to test it on herself before using it on Zosia. After administering the drug, she loses several hours, awakening on her couch with a video recording revealing her emotional turmoil over Helen’s death and burgeoning feelings for Zosia.

Afterward, she goes to visit her Joined friend in the hospital and takes her in a wheelchair outside. In a tense scene, she injects Zosia with thiopental sodium to extract information about reversing the infection. As Zosia struggles with her memories, Carol questions her while handcuffed to prevent the Others from intervening. Suddenly, she’s surrounded by a crowd coming to stop her. Emotional pleas of “please, Carol” arise from the crowd as Zosia suddenly goes into cardiac arrest. The Others seek Carol’s consent to resuscitate her. They perform CPR, and an automated defibrillator is reviving her as the scene fades to black.

Overall: Watch Pluribus (2025): S1E04 – “Please, Carol”

Episode 4 of “Pluribus” highlights Carol’s significant progress, as she uncovers valuable insights about the Others’ honesty and the Joining. The narrative takes a turn, which prompts Carol to reflect on her sole friendship in the new world. Despite growing obstacles, including restrictions on separating individuals from the hive mind, Carol is poised for collaboration with Manousos, albeit hindered by distance and language barriers.

This episode reveals that the Joined can revert from their state, adding depth to Carol’s challenges and risking her choices as she delves deeper into their secrets. The eerily suspenseful ending suggests that the Joined are aware of Carol’s discoveries, leaving room for further exploration in future episodes. Overall, the episode effectively combines plot development with a steady tension that enhances the storytelling.
