Recap Pluribus (2025): S1E05 – ” Got Milk”
This episode of Pluribus opens with one of the Others sipping a milk carton at the hospital. Inside, Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) anxiously waits for news on Zosia (Karolina Wydra) while fidgeting with a stress-reliever toy. She receives a call from Laxmi (Menik Gooneratne), who is furious with her. Last episode, all the infected broke down in tears, saying “Please Carol,” including her son. But she fails to provide a convincing defense before she hangs up. Afterwards, when Carol asks about Zosia’s condition, she gets a terse response from the nurse.
We Just Need A Little Space
After briefly resting in the waiting room, the romance writer discovers that both the hospital and Zosia have mysteriously vanished. Everyone in the city has orderly boarded buses and left. Her attempts to reach the Others result in only a recorded message. A brilliant voice cameo by Better Call Saul’s Patrick Fabian assures her that it’s not her. They just need a break.
Peace, Love, and Understanding
Carol rushes to the rooftop of the Crowne Plaza hotel, only to see the Others’ vehicles leaving Albuquerque. It’s an eerie moment in the Pluribus episode. Initially relieved by the distance, she later records a video with a speech for her fellow survivors, filling them in on what she’s learned. Unfortunately, she’s still wearing part of the handcuffs, which makes her appear unstable. After leaving a voicemail for the infected to distribute her video message to other immune individuals, they respond by sending a drone instead of engaging directly with her. It dutifully carries it away.
She Wants the Lights Back On
Later that night brings a profound sense of loneliness for Carol as she lies in bed, haunted by the memory of her late wife, Helen. The sounds of animals raiding the trash outside drive her to confront them with a golf club, highlighting the encroachment of nature following a power shutdown in her area. Frustrated, she leaves a message insisting that the power be restored to the city before trying to sleep with all the lights on.
You Sure Love Your Milk
In the morning, Carol cleans up after the wolves and calls the Others for a trash pickup, only to receive a recorded message with specific instructions, including a weight limit. However, their drone mishandles an oversized bag, leading to it getting stuck on a lamppost and a spill on the sidewalk. Since it’s her fault for ignoring the weight limit, she disposes of her trash in a public bin and discovers an unusual number of empty milk cartons in the recycling. While dumpster diving, she finds more cartons all processed at the abandoned Duke City Dairy, raising her curiosity about why they aren’t being filled with milk. There’s something else going on.
Greetings, Fellow Survivors
After A Few Hours, Carol investigates the contents of cartons labeled as milk, finding a strange amber liquid made from water and an unidentified white powder. Her testing reveals it has no smell, an olive oil-like texture, and a pH level of 7.1, indicating it is slightly basic. She records a video, but the status of her findings being shared with other survivors is uncertain. Either way, a drone is sent to collect her video despite another being stuck on a lamppost. Are they even being delivered? She doesn’t know.
That’s the Sound of the Police
Later that night, the wolves come back, and this time they’re not content to simply dig through the trash. The realization that they mean to unearth Helen’s body from where it’s buried in the backyard is horrifying, but Carol doesn’t have time to think, or even pause to figure out how to unclip the shotgun inside her commandeered police vehicle. Instead, she drives the car through the back fence, sirens and lights fully blasting, to scare the pack off, and spends the rest of the night keeping a restless vigil over her wife’s grave.
What’s With the Animals?
This raises a question. This is the first episode of Pluribus that hints at what’s happening with animals in this world. Up until now, there hasn’t been a single bird, cat, or dog. We know the animals were let out of the zoos by the others, but where did they go? Why are they so hungry? Who’s walking the dogs?
How Doers Get More Done
Anyway, in the morning, she drives over to a local building supply warehouse to pick up some heavy outdoor tiles, which she spends most of the day laying over Helen’s gravesite until every inch is covered — and then hand-paints a headstone with her wife’s name as the finishing touch. The act is a powerful visual representation of Carol’s grief and her fear of losing the past and her loved ones, even as the world around her changes.
The Horrifying Truth
Later, after a long day’s work, she discovers a barcode on the bag of white powder, linking it to a locally packaged dog food from Agri-Jet. Sneaking into an empty facility, she finds a walk-in cooler filled with perishables and wrapped packaging. Her shocked reaction upon uncovering the contents signals the potential horror behind the powder consumed by the Others, leaving the mystery unresolved until next week.
