Fans have been begging for it. Now, Coogler has officially revealed that his upcoming feature film will be another “Black Panther.” Fans have been eagerly waiting to see what’s next for Wakanda, and Black Panther 3 promises to deliver in a big way.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film is set to explore new leadership, emerging threats, and the future of the Black Panther mantle. From Shuri’s evolution to potential villains like Namor or Doctor Doom, every detail matters for the MCU’s next chapter.
If you’re ready to uncover what’s coming, here’s everything you need to know about Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated Marvel sequel.
Wakanda in Transition
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever picks up after the death of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), exploring how Wakanda grapples with loss while defending itself from external threats. Shuri (Letitia Wright), his sister, steps into a new role as the nation searches for a leader worthy of the Black Panther mantle. Meanwhile, the underwater nation of Talokan, led by Namor (Tenoch Huerta), challenges Wakanda over Vibranium resources, sparking political and personal conflicts. The film balances epic action with intimate moments, honoring Chadwick Boseman’s legacy while introducing new characters and dynamics. Themes of legacy, grief, and resilience drive Wakanda into an uncertain but hopeful future.
Black Panther is not only the protector of Wakanda but also its spiritual leader. The leader of Wakanda also steers the direction and future of the nation and its vast source of precious vibranium.
We already knew Marvel was planning a sequel to the hit series. Denzel Washington already confirmed that he’s been cast in a mysterious role. Now we have confirmation from the man himself.
Ryan Coogler, the writer/director of the last two movies, revealed that the threequel is “the next movie” on his schedule during a panel discussion for Sinners at Deadline’s Contenders Film event. “If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm nor deny.’ But we’re working on it hard.”

Who Will Be the Next Black Panther?
Chadwick Boseman was electric as T’Challa the king of Wakanda. His unexpected death left a void in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). There were many questions about how the movies would fill the gap. The Black Panther sequel set up Shuri making a synthetic “Sacred Herb” and taking on the mantle of the Wakandan superhero.
But there are rumors that Doomsday will introduce a new male Black Panther. Letitia Wright has been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. This will be the first time Shuri has held the mantle of the Black Panther among the Avengers. She’s taking over from T’Challa in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But it seems she may not be the only Black Panther in the film. Entertainment industry insider Daniel Richtman reported on X (locked to subscribers) that there will be another Black Panther in Avengers: Doomsday and that this one will be male. This means that a male character will once again hold the mantle of the Black Panther in the MCU, at the same time that Shuri holds it as the female Black Panther.
Jeff Sneider reported that Marvel is “open” to recasting Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, possibly due to the Multiverse concept. This could allow for a new actor to play a Multiversal version of T’Challa, creating interesting storylines with Shuri. Alternatively, the new Black Panther might be an entirely different character from the Multiverse. In Marvel Comics, K’Shamba, who appeared in Black Panther 2099, is a potential candidate for the role, as he has previously battled Doctor Doom and possesses ties relevant to the Multiverse, making him a suitable choice for inclusion in Doomsday.
But we can’t forget about M’Baku (Winston Duke) taking over leadership. Also, we don’t know the future or legacy of T’Challa and Nakia’s (Lupita Nyong’o) son, Toussaint/T’Challa II (Divine Love Konadu-Sun). We’ll have to wait and see.
New Threats to Wakanda
The new Black Panther film is expected to bring Wakanda into the center of intense global and multiversal conflicts. Fans anticipate the potential return of Namor and Talokan, reigniting their rivalry in a natural sequel arc, especially since his actions led to the death of Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett).
At the same time, global competition for Vibranium and rising geopolitical tensions could introduce villains like Doctor Doom, rival nations, or new warlords.
While a Namor conflict feels the most organic direction for the story, Doom’s involvement would strategically set up Secret Wars. The film may also hint at cosmic or multiversal threats, expanding Wakanda’s influence across the MCU.
Expanding Wakanda’s Characters
“Okoye and the Midnight Angels” was a cancelled upcoming Disney+ series focused on the character Okoye (Danai Gurira) from the MCU, who leads the Midnight Angels alongside Aneka (Michaela Coel). The show was intended to explore the formation of this elite subgroup of the Dora Milaje, as introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The storyline could be picked up in the next movie.
Nakia was already exploring her role in Wakandan politics in the last two movies. Now that she’s a mother, she can explore new ways to help the world’s future for her son.
Not to mention that Riri Williams / Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) could return for the next Black Panther film. But there are many more characters from the Marvel comics universe they can draw from.
The MCU Connection
Black Panther 3 is poised to deepen Wakanda’s role in the wider MCU, connecting the nation to upcoming Avengers events, multiverse storylines, and other Marvel heroes. Vibranium’s strategic importance could draw global and cosmic attention, while alliances and rivalries—such as with Namor, Talokan, or Doctor Doom—may have ripple effects across multiple franchises. The introduction of Adamantium by Captain America: New World Order could shift the importance of the African nation in the MCU.
Secondary characters like Riri Williams or Everett Ross could bridge Wakanda to other corners of the MCU, while Shuri’s evolution as Black Panther may influence key events in future team-ups or crossover films. This sequel could redefine Wakanda as a central hub in Marvel’s next phase.
Cultural and Narrative Significance
The first movie helped redefine Afrofuturism in the Marvel universe and science fiction films. Plus, they were a landmark moment in the depiction of African Americans in movies. Both in front of and behind the scenes.
Black Panther 3 has the opportunity to expand on Chadwick Boseman’s legacy and honor his memory. It can also be a bridge between the classic movies of the MCU and the next generation.
When is Black Panther 3 Coming Out?
The studio hasn’t revealed the release date of the film. But we can guess. The first two movies were released in February (Black History Month). So it’s a good bet that the third one will come out in February too.
Marvel’s release calendar points to a 2028 release date. Filming is reportedly starting in June 2026. There are three untitled movies for February 18, May 5, and November 10, 2028, and later added a fourth untitled movie was added for December 15, 2028.
Expect Black Panther 3 to be released on February 18, 2028. That would put it in Phase 7 of the MCU but it could always come earlier.
Conclusion
Black Panther 3 is shaping up to be a game-changer for Wakanda and the MCU. With Ryan Coogler back in the director’s chair, the film promises new leadership, high-stakes threats, and deeper connections across the Marvel universe.
