Lucasfilm has unveiled the first official trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the upcoming Star Wars movie, following what has seemed like (and largely been) years of anticipation.
Watch it below:
The first official footage from The Mandalorian and Grogu was released today by Disney and Lucasfilm. The Mandalorian season 3 ended with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) formally allying himself with the fledgling New Republic as a gun for hire. The film, which is directed by Jon Favreau, is Lucasfilm’s first Star Wars theatrical release since the Skywalker Saga’s conclusion with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
The official logline from Lucasfilm reads:
“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”
Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, the film continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu as they assist the New Republic in maintaining peace in the galaxy. The film’s score is composed by Ludwig Göransson, known for his work on the first two seasons of The Mandalorian.
With its blend of action, beloved characters, and emotional moments, The Mandalorian and Grogu aims to recapture the magic of the original trilogy while introducing new elements to the Star Wars saga.
Discover 13 exciting details you may have missed in the first trailer, from hidden Easter eggs to big story teases that set up the Star Wars duo’s next adventure.
1. Return of Stormtroopers

The trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu begins with Din Djarin and Grogu watching stormtroopers, signaling they are facing remnants of the Empire. This aligns with the exclusive footage from “Star Wars Celebration 2025,” which suggests they’re working for Sigourney Weaver’s New Republic character. The movie is set in approximately 9-ish ABY, four years after the end of the Galactic Civil War at the Battle of Jakku. Other Imperial Warlords are likely to form major antagonists in the movie.
2. An AT-AT Explodes

Mando and Grogu appear to be in trouble, and it’s not just the stormtroopers at the beginning of the trailer. An AT-AT (All-Terrain Armored Transport) explodes later in the video, giving us a peek at some AT-AT combat. Given that it is encircled by snow, the stormtroopers appear to be in a different location, possibly even on a different planet (Hoth?). It appears that Djarin and Grogu are dealing with many Imperial entanglements. Additionally, we know from the Celebration film that Mando effortlessly and single-handedly takes out this full AT-AT in true Mando fashion.
3. Return of the Anzellans

Grogu befriends the Anzellans, the same species as Babu Frik from The Rise of Skywalker, during a tunnel scene. They praise Grogu’s sharpshooting skills (“good shot, baby”) with his Beskar plate and wrist blaster, forged during The Mandalorian season 3. Grogu is on a big adventure with his new friends.
4. A New Ship

At the very beginning of the trailer, we see Mando and Grogu coming on a spacecraft that is unquestionably not their N-1 Naboo starfighter from season 3, suggesting that they have a new ride. This one resembles their ST-70 assault ship, which was destroyed in season 2, except it is considerably larger. Additionally, it has some elegant stripes painted on it, which further set it apart from our beloved “Razor Crest.” Plus, the cockpit looks completely different from Mando’s ship.
5. The Amani Returns…Too

A sinister-looking extraterrestrial emerges from the waters in an underground cave—is this related to what Grogu and the Anzellan were previously investigating?
Naturally, this is a classic Star Wars alien: an Amani, a species that was initially introduced in Return of the Jedi alongside the bounty hunters. It is unclear whether this is the bounty hunter Amanaman or another Amani. If so, are there any bounties still out on Grogu or Din?
6. The Return of the Hutts

The trailer features Rotta the Hutt, who appears involved in a criminal enterprise. We previously knew that Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, would be playing Rotta the Hutt and joining Mandalorian and Grogu, so we might already know who this is, and it’s a really crazy one.
Rotta, Jabba’s son, was first shown in the 2008 animated Clone Wars film, which launched the popular animated series. In that film, the Separatist-backed Ziro the Hutt kidnapped Rotta, the young child of Jabba. He’s primarily referred to as “Stinky” by newly introduced Padawan Ahsoka Tano, in an effort to thwart negotiations between Jabba and the Galactic Republic.
7. Neon Cityscape

Shots of neon signs suggest the movie may feature planets like Coruscant (the Old Republic capital) or Daiyu (introduced in Obi-Wan Kenobi). The neon signs reflected in puddles suggest there may be scenes set in these shady city locations, akin to the prequels. However, the exact name of the planet remains to be seen.
8. Special Armor and Gadgets

Grogu is wearing an armored Beskar plate given to him by The Armorer in season 3 and using a wrist blaster to defend against tunnel creatures. His growth and gear upgrades from previous seasons are highlighted. The Anzellans compliment Grogu on his shooting skills, and he’s clearly learning from Mando. This includes using a wrist blaster to shoot green goo at a creature.
9. Mantellian Savrip Cameo

A sentient species first featured in the hologame Dejarik from A New Hope is introduced in the gladiatorial ring. The creature, a cross between a Rancor and a lizard, is also a callback to the large beast from Return of the Jedi. A Rancor was previously subdued in The Book of Boba Fett finale by Grogu using the Force. Maybe he’ll use his powers again?
Could this be the first appearance of Kalhar from the 1992 LucasArts video game Super Star Wars? He later became an official canon character in Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine as a famous brawler and gladiator.
10. Colonel Ward

Din and Grogu have a tense meeting with a New Republic liaison, portrayed by the legendary Sigourney Weaver, back on Adelphi. The Alien and Avatar star took the stage at the most recent Star Wars Celebration event, which took place in Japan earlier this April, to give a brief teaser about her character, Colonel Ward, who is characterized as a fighter pilot.
“She came up in the Rebellion and now she’s trying to protect the New Republic, and I believe is completely committed to what she does, has had the good sense to hire Mandalorian and this sidekick, and I’m gonna find out if they’re as good as they say,” she said at the time. “I’m counting on it!” Weaver is seen wearing a New Republic flight suit, so we might see her doing more than just snatching Grogu’s snacks.
11. A Rebels Character Returns

In his big screen debut, Zeb Orrelios, a beloved character from Star Wars Rebels, uses his trademark bo-rifle to fight stormtroopers. In this first trailer, we get a brief shot of Zeb after making his live-action debut in season three of The Mandalorian at Adelphi Base as a New Republic pilot.
Like Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger, who all made their live-action debuts in Ahsoka season 1, he’s back. Footage shown to viewers at D23 last year revealed Zeb’s more engaged position in this film.
13. Mysterious Insignia

Din faces off against two hulking droids in an arena setting, possibly part of Rotta’s operation. The Desilijic clan emblem, which Jabba and Rotta were part of, is visible behind the droids. A door guarded by droids with a trident-like insignia may indicate the villains Mando and Grogu might be facing.
The Desilijic Tiure clan, also known as the Tiure family, was a Hutt kajidic group. Their matriarch and patriarch were Mama and Papa, respectively. They had three children, including Ziro, Ebor, and a son who later became Jabba’s father. Jabba had his own son, Rotta, and was the uncle to Gorga Desilijic Aarrpo.
It looks like the Hutts are a big part of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The Mandalorian and Grogu’s official preview, despite lots of Star Wars references, lacks clear details about the plot, characters, or anything else. The preview is based on vibes and is expected to focus on Mando shooting Imperials and Grogu being cute and doing cute things, as the movie is still eight months away.
But before the movie hits theatres on May 22, 2026, we still have plenty of time to find out more about it
