Since its debut almost 40 years ago, Star Trek: The Next Generation has established itself as one of the most cherished shows in the legendary franchise, which started in 1966. Star Trek has not slowed down in the years after, and the most recent television adaptation, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, will debut on Paramount+ in early 2026.
The primary executive producer and “overseer” of all three current live-action and two animated Star Trek programs is Alex Kurtzman, a producer, screenwriter, and director.
Kurtzman recently revealed that viewers should anticipate a somewhat serialized style of storytelling on Starfleet Academy, similar to the later seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. However, that doesn’t rule out the occasional “alien of the week” adventure.
“Well, the beauty is you have to have a four-year plan because college is four years long,” he told Collider. Following “The Burn” (the 31st-century galaxy-wide cataclysm) in Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet Academy will relate the tale of the first Academy class in a century.
Kurtzman continued, “What I think we’ve found, and I would say that Starfleet is kind of the sum total of everything we’ve learned on all the shows, is that, yes, there are serialized stories that take you from the beginning to the end of the season and that will carry into Season 2, however, we really do have standalone episodes.”
“So, once the story has been established, and everybody gets together, we begin to foreground certain characters as the lead of each episode, and then everybody comes together, so that by the time you get to the finale, you know everybody very, very well,” Kurtzman continued. “So it’s kind of a perfect balance, I think, of Next Gen standalone episodes where there’s a case of the week, or an alien of the week, or a diplomatic problem of the week, but then by the end of the season you realize it all weaves together into a bigger story. We’re sort of doubling down on that in Season 2, but that’s the structure of the show,” he confirmed.
Academy Award winner Holly Hunter plays the role of the titular academy’s chancellor, Captain Nahla Ake, in Starfleet Academy. Bella Shephard, Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, Oded Fehr, Mary Weisman, Robert Picardo, Tatiana Maslany, Paul Giamatti, Karim Diané, Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, and George Hawkins are also featured on the show.
The show’s official logline reads:
“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows the adventures of a new class of cadets in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
Last month, a trailer for Starfleet Academy was unveiled and you can watch it below:
While no specified date has been announced, the program is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ in 2026.
