The main reason the Deadpool movie trilogy got off the ground is the 2014 release of test footage for the first installment. Since then, it has been widely accepted that Ryan Reynolds, the lead actor, was likely involved. The actor has now admitted that he leaked it.
Reynolds evaded the question before this. Last year, he even took a polygraph test for Vanity Fair, although he never provided a definitive response. Fans have been debating this mystery for years, but his recent acknowledgment solves it.
You can watch it below:
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), the Canadian actor said that while the leak could have been “cheating,” it was done with the best of intentions. He told the magazine, “I think I was onto something that people would be interested in.” While he and director Tim Miller were filming the material, Fox started to worry about making an R-rated superhero film with a little-known character—especially one they had failed before.
Reynolds found Wade Wilson appealing because he wasn’t a popular character, and his self-awareness broke the fourth wall. Regarding the character’s behaviour, he realized it was all new. “The test footage…really was a case study of how this could work. And they just wouldn’t do anything with it.” When said footage leaked, he recalled thinking about “the a–hole [that] leaked it, and I’m looking at the guy in the mirror brushing my teeth. And I’m like, ‘Dude, what have you done? This could be punishable by law!’ But the internet forced the studio to say, ‘We’re gonna make this movie,’ and 24 hours later, that movie had a green light.”
Despite having a small budget of $58 million, the original Deadpool movie made almost $780 million worldwide. It broke the previous record for the highest-grossing film. The gamble paid off, as seen by the sequel’s even higher performance.
Reynolds has been a major creative force behind Deadpool’s live-action adaptations since the first film, which has gone on to earn a lot of money and contribute to the emergence of a new wave of R-rated superhero content. Even DC is enjoying success with the popularity of the mature Peacemaker show. Nowadays, Deadpool is as well-known as Spider-Man (and both could appear in upcoming Avengers films), and it has established itself as the actor’s signature role.
Reynolds’ admission emphasizes the influence of social media as well. In just a few hours, a brief video can reach millions. Studios keep a careful eye on these developments. Today, studios move more quickly in response to audience demand for a movie.
For creators, the lesson is obvious. Be willing to take chances, listen to your fans, and share your vision. An example of how timing and passion can create a hit is the Deadpool leak.
So, congratulations to Reynolds for his hustle and foresight?
