The X-Men franchise’s Simon Kinberg is implying that the future of the galaxy far, far away might resemble Andor more than your average film trilogy. Kinberg publicly acknowledged the Disney+ series as the source of inspiration for the next movie in a recent interview that GamesRadar obtained, mentioning Tony Gilroy’s preference for morally nuanced characters and political intrigue.
“There are a lot of extremely talented people who want to do great work,” According to Kinberg. “I was really impressed and inspired by what Tony Gilroy accomplished with Andor. That, in my opinion, was the best science fiction narrative that any series could provide.”
Star Wars fans haven’t been captivated by a story as strongly as Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) tale in a long time. Andor debuted with high anticipation, quickly became a U.S. streaming leader, and consistently stayed in the top rankings across different platforms through late fall 2022. The live-action Star Wars series was the ninth most-streamed series on Disney+ in 2022 and the tenth most-watched pirated TV series. It generated over $300 million in global streaming subscriber revenue.
Although the second season viewership numbers give a slightly different picture, Andor season two was generally seen as a success, both critically and monetarily. Although its initial audience wasn’t as high as that of some other Disney+ Star Wars series, it received a lot of positive reviews and great word-of-mouth, which helped the Star Wars franchise.
With his ups and downs, Simon Kinberg’s Hollywood career is particularly intriguing. As a writer, he has had both successes (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and failures (X-Men: The Last Stand, Fant4stic, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix). As a producer, he has also contributed to the realization of the vision required to launch the first two Deadpool films, as well as the highly regarded Logan and (not related to Marvel) The Martian.
He was probably chosen because he’s had more steady success in the Star Wars universe. In addition to helping launch the $2 billion film Star Wars: The Force Awakens by providing an early treatment for its script, he co-wrote and wrote many of the most significant episodes of Star Wars Rebels and was instrumental in reviving the franchise after a decade of film dormancy. He was also given some “Special Thanks” credits in both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Force Awakens.
Though it sounds like he’s still in the “pinch-me” stage of the process, using the Emmy-nominated program as a starting point should reassure viewers and imply that he has something intriguing in the works. “It’s not even a dream come true—I couldn’t have dreamed it,” he explained. “Just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it.”
Although nothing is known about the specifics of Kinberg’s intended trilogy, we do know that it will take place after Rise of Skywalker. It is reported that Kinberg will write and produce the upcoming trilogy, in which Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey Skywalker.
Additionally, Kinberg’s remarks subtly criticize a few previous Star Wars movies. He implied that smaller, more personal stories have a greater impact than the highly choreographed, effects-heavy set pieces that mostly characterized the subsequent trilogy, without specifically mentioning any specific movie. He’s signaling to the fan community that character development and depth will likely be given top priority in the upcoming movies, citing Andor as an example.
We’ll see if the new Star Wars movies rank compared to the others. What does this mean for the big-screen version of Star Wars? Political scheming, ethically dubious heroes, and difficult decisions that reflect Andor’s tonal diversity are all possible. Simon Kinberg is working on a new trilogy of Star Wars films, but no release dates have been set.
