Review:
Paramount+ giveth and Paramount+ taketh away. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ third season has finally started, after Discovery and Lower Decks ended. Sadly, Paramount announced that SNW is ending after season five. Despite initial fan panic, the situation is not as dire as initially thought.
First, the series will have two full 10-episode seasons before its final six-episode season. Production for the final season is set to begin later this year, ensuring a steady run of 26 episodes.
Second, Strange New Worlds, unlike any Trek show, builds towards a set endpoint with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and an Avengers-style subplot about the 1960s original series crew coming together. Martin Quinn’s Montgomery Scott joined last season, and it’s possible to see Sulu or Chekov before the season ends.
After a lengthy break, Strange New Worlds resumes its Gorn plot, with the Spock/Chapel narrative emerging as the week’s most notable development. The plot concerning the crew members who the Gorn has seized is less interesting than the remainder of the episode, but Anson Mount takes Pike to new heights (or is that lows?) as he copes with more tragedy.
With outstanding work both in front of and behind the camera, a solid episode launches the show for a new season. The plot kept together well despite a few hand gestures and shortcuts, enabling some gripping character drama. Since the Gorn appear to have been left aside (at least for the time being), the program has more space to explore, including some important character relationships that were established in this opening. The characters and the show exhibit a newfound confidence that builds anticipation for the third season, which has been eagerly anticipated for far too long.
Overall: Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2025): S3E01 – “Hegemony, Part II”
