Despite the critical success of Thunderbolts, his anti-hero team-up, Jake Schreier has a larger Marvel ensemble film in the works.
Director Jake Schreier, who directed Marvel’s previous 2025 blockbuster, Thunderbolts, is looking ahead to the studio’s most anticipated film that does not contain the term “Avengers” in its title, while Marvel revels in the success of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Following Deadpool & Wolverine, Schreier is directing the film that will fully integrate the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As one might anticipate, he is carefully considering how to handle the frequently adapted characters.
Speaking to the Playlist (and in Marvel-approved non-spoilery language), Schreier stated that his film’s perspective on the X-Men will be significantly different from what fans have seen before. Of course, he couldn’t go into further detail, but his comments indicate that the shift will come not from the film’s aesthetics, but from a new approach to the emotional journeys of its famously conflicted mutants.
“To be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that’s like a very rare and fortunate opportunity,” he told the outlet. “That’s very exciting.”
According to the same Playlist article, Marvel chief Kevin Feige described Schreier’s X-Men as a “youth-focused reboot” in terms of casting as well as “tone and perspective.”
Details concerning the forthcoming X-Men film are predictably scant at present; no release date has been announced, despite the MCU’s trajectory being planned until 2026 (Spider-Man: Brand Brand New Day; Avengers: Doomsday) and 2027 (Avengers: Secret Wars). Several actors from the Fox X-Men films, which were released before Marvel parent company Disney acquired the franchise in 2019, are set to appear in the two Avengers films, with Schreier’s relaunch following.
