Warning: Spoilers for Foundation Season 3 Episode 2 “Shadows in the Math”

“Shadows in the Math,” the second episode of Season 3 of Foundation, allows for some speculation. An episode is better if there is less voiceover throughout. Extra points if that episode begins with no voiceover at all and functions like a typical TV show. Although I don’t yet have enough information to support this theory, if Episode 2 of Season 3 of Foundation is any indication, it has some merit.

Although this episode is better than the last one, it remains somewhat slow due to the extensive time spent on each region of the galaxy, leaving little time for character development. But things are moving forward.

The Mule (Pilou Asbæk) has arrived, and it will be difficult to contain this threat. This man seeks respect and is completely obsessed with it, as demonstrated by his behavior at the dinner table.

The 151-year history is further developed in the opening sequences between Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) and Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), which are skillfully handled, particularly when the Third Crisis strikes and Seldon gives his life to restore the Plan’s direction.

A whole new power dynamic might emerge in the Galaxy as a result of Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann) using a new Death Star and possibly giving it to Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton). There is also the turmoil surrounding the Cleons.

The subtle soundtrack creates a lot of atmosphere, yet the show still looks fantastic visually. In any case, everything is left up in the air for what ought to be a spectacular series of episodes.

Characters are the main emphasis of good television, which also poses new queries while providing answers to old ones. That’s what “Shadows of the Math” did, and the result is a far better presentation. All we have to do now is see how they pay off.

Overall: Watch Foundation (2025): S3E02 – “Shadows in the Math”

The second episode of Foundation Season 3 is far superior to the first. Day and Dusk gave us more fantastic character moments, we’re learning more about Day, and there are a lot of moving parts that could end up in intriguing ways. And with only a little voiceover!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
