Bryce Dallas Howard discussed creating a Star Wars Mace Windu spinoff with Dave Filoni, the head of Lucasfilm.
Filoni, 50, and Howard, 44, collaborated on the Star Wars series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Howard has now hinted that she has discussed the possibility of reviving Samuel L. Jackson’s renowned Jedi in a future project with Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer.
“I went straight to Dave Filoni and I was like, ‘So, let’s just talk about Mace Windu and where he is,'” she said to The Direct. “Could we simply discuss this? For what reason? Is he dead? Is he?'”
The Jurassic World star noted that Jackson, 76, has always been “incredibly supportive” of her, and he wanted to collaborate with her on a movie she was directing.
“Sam Jackson has been really supportive of me and has repeatedly told me that he would act in something that I directed, which is, like, I’m not worthy, basically,” she stated.
Although the Jedi hasn’t been seen since his tragic encounter with Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid), Jackson played Mace Windu in George Lucas’ prequel trilogy, which ran from Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace in 1999 to Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith in 2005.
Nevertheless, the Pulp Fiction star had previously maintained that Mace Windu was still alive in the Star Wars world and that, following their collaboration on the 2024 movie Argylle, he had genuinely spoken with Howard the possibility of starring in a future project set in the galaxy far, far away.
Jackson stated on the Happy Sad Confused podcast: “I believe [Windu] is still alive someplace… People with one hand have a long history of making a comeback in Star Wars.
“The only person I’ve ever said that to, about coming back, was Bryce Dallas Howard. I just did a movie with her, and she directs episodes of The Mandalorian.
“So I was like, ‘Do you think you might be able to hook a brother up? I mean, you like me, right?’ And she’s like ‘I love you, you’re amazing!’ So I said, ‘Put me back in it.’ I’ll learn to use the Lightsaber left-handed!”
“Somehow,” many fans sighed and rolled their eyes when Palpatine returned, proving that anything is possible. Why can’t Mace Windu survive being electrocuted by Palpatine, just as Darth Maul survived being sliced in half during the events of The Phantom Menace and Anakin Skywalker survived what appeared to be a deadly blow from Obi-Wan and being set on fire?
Jackson has made repeated similar statements in the past. He is certain that Mace Windu could have survived both the fall and the electrocution, and he is more than willing to return as a Jedi.
I’m even more sure that Mace Windu deserves another opportunity in this franchise. He was underutilized in the prequel trilogy. A spin-off may delve into the vast amount of backstory that surrounds Mace Windu’s expertise, his intricate balancing act between the light and dark sides, and some of his more unexpected actions on the Jedi Council, particularly in the books. It’s incredible that Bryce Dallas Howard, the director of The Mandalorian, wants a Mace Windu spin-off, even though we might never see one.
