When fans realized Netflix’s Daredevil was being relaunched under the Disney+ label, they were curious whether it would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The answer is a little hazy, given that the show has ignored Matt Murdock’s romance with Jennifer Walters in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. There’s also no mention of Spider-Man being Matt Murdock’s client.
Nonetheless, the nine episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are filled with grit and wrath, paying homage to the Netflix era. They chronicle the terrible story of Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, who uses chaos and violence to seize power in New York. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), the “Man Without Fear,” suffers in retirement. Daredevil: Born Again season one provided an exciting story, but which of the nine episodes is the best?
9. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Optics” (Season 1, Episode 2)

Directed By Michael Cuesta
Official Synopsis: “Matt Murdock gets a new client who’s more than he claims to be. Fisk learns the power of optics.”
Marvel’s Daredevil series, initially a light reboot, has been reimagined as a continuation of the original dark Netflix storylines. “Optics” introduces Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes) as a sympathetic character, but the plot fails to highlight his heroics. Despite poor writing and inconsistent delivery, Matt’s violent spark brings together the show’s diverse elements.
8. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Art for Art’s Sake” (Season 1, Episode 7)

Directed By David Boyd
Official Synopsis: “Daredevil is back and races to stop Muse before he can kill again. Fisk’s rivals in the criminal underworld take advantage of the chaos.”
The original six-episode series, Daredevil: Born Again, was canceled in September 2023 because the studio hated it. Dario Scardapane was hired as the new showrunner, and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead directed the remaining episodes. The series’ darker tone and established plots were reflected in the new format. However, “Art for Art’s Sake,” was disappointing, emphasizing toxic masculinity and a lack of character growth.
7. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Heaven’s Half Hour” (Season 1, Episode 1)

Directed By Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson
Official Synopsis: “Matt Murdock gives up the mask. Wilson Fisk has his sights set to new heights.”
Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson starred in Netflix’s Daredevil (2015) series. Iinitially they weren’t announced as part of the cast but returned. The first episode reshoots footage from the original series to fit the new tone. “Daredevil: Born Again” brings back Hornhead and Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), but the direction is listless. The episode is slightly better than “Optics” due to a tighter plot and better dialogue.
6. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “With Interest” (Season 1, Episode 5)

Directed By Jeffrey Nachmanoff
Official Synopsis: “A day in the life of Matt Murdock gets unexpectedly intense, forcing him to team up with a familiar face.”
The fifth episode of Daredevil: Born Again, “With Interest,” offers a standalone installment that links two shows together. Mohan Kapur reprises his role of Kamala Khan’s father from Ms. Marvel and The Marvels. The episode showcases intense moments and a mysterious villain. Despite its cool down feel, it remains the most fun installment of the season, even with one of the most brutal fight scenes.
5. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Sic Semper Systema” (Season 1, Episode 4)

Directed By Jeffrey Nachmanoff
Official Synopsis: “Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s darker halves fight to be unleashed.”
Vincent D’Onofrio delivers a psychologically charged performance in Episode 4, allowing Matt’s guilt to drive the narrative. The episode features a resurgence of characters like Murdock and Castle (Jon Bernthal), and a return to basics for the superhero reboot. While the episode may not surpass “The Hollow of His Hand’s” dramatic high point, it offers a welcome return to basics for the series.
4. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “The Hollow of His Hand” (Season 1, Episode 3)

Directed By Michael Cuesta
Official Synopsis: “The trial of Hector Ayala begins. Fisk’s old business associates seek to claim his vacant mantle.”
The third episode of Disney’s Daredevil: Born Again, “The Hollow of His Hand,” is a powerful portrayal of socioeconomic issues and the impact of Hector Ayala’s performance as Ayala. However, critics argue that the episode’s superficial climactic moments and uneven tone may not justify its existence. The series’ potential is emphasized in the third episode.
3. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Excessive Force” (Season 1, Episode 6)

Directed By David Boyd
Official Synopsis: “When a serial killer terrorizes the streets of New York, the city needs a savior.”
The sixth episode of Daredevil: Born Again, “Excessive Force,” delivers intense moments and a significant turning point for the season. Despite some ill-placed humor and ill-executed CGI, the episode is a big win for the series, with Tony Dalton’s inclusion as Jack Duquesne / Swordsman feeling natural.the men they pretended to leave behind.
2. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Isle of Joy” (Season 1, Episode 8)

Directed By Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson
Official Synopsis: At his inaugural Black and White Ball, Mayor Fisk tightens his grip on New York City. Matt Murdock learns shocking information when an old enemy reaches out.
The sixth episode, “Excessive Force,” delivers intense moments and a significant turning point for the season. Despite some ill-placed humor and ill-executed CGI, the episode is a big win for the series, with Tony Dalton’s inclusion as Jack Duquesne / Swordsman feeling natural.
1. Marvel Television Daredevil: Born Again “Straight to Hell” (Season 1, Episode 9)

Directed By Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson
Official Synopsis: Mayor Fisk becomes Mayor Kingpin; Daredevil is unleashed as chaos takes over the city.
Born Again restores New York as a vibrant MCU city, reshaping the city with danger and action. The painting “Rabbit in a Snowstorm” is never more chilling. The return of Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is on par with the original three seasons. “Straight to Hell” concludes one of the favorite comic book seasons. Woll and Bernthal’s chemistry is more evident than in most Marvel movies.
