Now that Super Mario Bros. is finally (almost) done and collecting coins, it’s time for the next video game adaptation to hit theaters.
Sony’s Gran Turismo movie is based on the popular racing simulator. It’s set its release date to August 11th and released the first trailer to prove it.
Check out the first trailer below.
the first poster has been released and you can see it below.
As you can see from the trailer, this isn’t your standard video game adaptation. It’s not meant to be an adaptation of Gran Turismo’s “story” but is set in a world obsessed with a racing simulator. There is a tournament to determine the best virtual racer (Kind of like The Wizard) and the winners get to race in real life (kind of like The Last Starfighter).
The vdeo game series began in 1997 with an eponymous entry from developer Polyphony Digital, directed by Kazunori Yamauchi. The games emphasize realism and the simulations reflect the real look and performance of the licensed vehicles. The series has amassed 14 entries and sold over 80 million units since its debut in 1997, making it the best-selling video game series for Sony and the PlayStation brand.
The wildest part is everything in the movie is based on a true story. The film tells the story of now-professional racing driver Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), who actually became obsessed with Gran Turismo. He really won the competitions and even managed to make a real career out of it. David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou and Geri Halliwell round out the cast.
The trailer follows the typical sports movie plot with an added twist of featuring
This might seem like an odd choice for a video game story, but the Gran Turismo series lacks in-depth knowledge to draw on. The film was directed by Neill Blomkamp, who helmed District 9 and Elysium, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for. In any case, August is fast approaching, so we don’t have to wait long.

It’ll probably be better than Need for Speed, which isn’t that hard really.
