DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is best known for his work as a writer/director at Marvel Studios. Guardians of the Galaxy, but the creator has said his next film, DC Superman: Legacy, will be very different.
Recently James Gunn did an interview with Rolling Stone. Will his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe set the tone for the new DC Universe? “I learned so much from making [the Guardians of the Galaxy] movies,” he said. “But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”
Plot details are scarce. But, it sounds like Gunn’s Superman will be a departure from the version that Zack Snyder brought to the DCEU. “His greatest weakness is that he’ll never kill anybody”, Gunn said. “He doesn’t want to hurt a living soul. I like that sort of innate goodness about Superman; it’s his defining characteristic. Gunn elaborated on his portrayal of the DCU’s Superman, describing the hero as “a big ol’ galoot”.
“He’s not [the] All-Star Superman [version of the character], but again, I’m a huge fan of All-Star Superman, and I’m very inspired by [that comic book series],” the director added. He describes the superhero as an idealistic “farmer from Kansas”.
Rocket Raccoon is a popular character in the MCU. Is Gunn interested in bringing a live-action Krypto the Superdog alongside Superman? “I think I would have an interest in a live-action Krypto whether or not I had anything to do with Rocket,” Gunn said. With the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, the writer/director is preparing to bid farewell to the MCU. This will be the last time this version of the Guardians will appear together. There’s a rumor that Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Cosmo the Spacedog will join Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and Mar-Vell ‘s daughter Phyla-Vell. Together they’ll become the new Guardians of the Galaxy.
James Gunn is giving us a sense of the film’s tone. But, the plot details for Superman: Legacy is currently classified. Henry Cavill will not return to play the Man of Steel. A new actor will play the title character. But, Gunn and DC Studios Co-President Peter Safran say that Legacy will not be an origin story. It focuses on a young Kal-El “balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”
The writer-director said Superman will be “younger than his 40s,” while fellow Justice League member Batman is a few years older than him. Warner Bros. offered Gunn the chance to make a Superman movie in 2018. Yet, he declined that project to do 2021’s The Suicide Squad instead. The director said he left the project, “because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.”
What do you think of James Gunn’s tone and casting choices for Superman? Will he help or hurt the DC franchise?

Getting to do a more serious superhero movie was probably one of the perks to lure Gunn into the job. Skipping the origin and doing more of a “year 2” story like Spider-Man Homecoming and The Batman is probably a good idea; Man of Steel might have been better without all that Krypton stuff at the beginning.
Everyone brings up All-Star Superman which really makes no sense as that was about Superman sort of doing a bucket list before he died. Series like “Secret Identity” or “American Alien” would be better points of reference.
