Recap: Miles Morales: Spider-Man #40
This is the third issue of the “Empire of the Spider” story arc. Miles, along with his mute shape-shifting clone/brother Shift, resistance fighters led by General Ganke, a grown-up version of his baby sister Billie (AKA Spider-Smasher), and her tech genius Johnetta are traveling across dimensions. They’re searching for his long-lost Uncle Aaron (AKA The Prowler). The group finds themselves in a dimension where Miles’ evil power-hungry clone Selim has created a totalitarian empire. They’re trapped in Brooklyn behind a dimensional shield.
They find Aaron imprisoned and is being used to power the shield for decades. While they’re able to free him Selim’s troops attack and lead them in a fierce battle. Taking heavy losses they manage to escape taking The Prowler with them. When Emperor Selim finds out that Brooklyn’s Webslinger escaped with his living battery he vows to stop them at all costs.
Johnetta is able to remove the equipment from his uncle and drop the shields. But Miles’ evil clone finds their secret base and personally leads to attack on his rival.
Overall: Buy Miles Morales: Spider-Man #40
The “Empire of the Spider” storyline has been entertaining with many inventive twists. Bringing Selim back was a wonderful move and having Miles’s sister grow up to be a powerful leader and heroine is inspired. But the story feels a little incomplete.
Saladin Ahmed is an Eisner-winning comic book writer so the dialogue is crisp and the story moves quickly. But there are a lot of missing pieces in the comic. They never explain how Aaron can power the battery or how Selim became the leader of this fanatical group. Ahmed’s arc still has time to answer questions and move the story along but this issue could have used more exposition.
Alberto Foche does a great job with the artwork and the action is fast-paced. The inking is competent but not overwhelming. David Curiel lends vibrant colors to Foche’s work with a vibrant palette.
The issue is wonderful and a good addition to a collection but barely makes a must-buy issue.
