The Coronavirus pandemic is causing big changes to the movie industry. There has been talk that some movies would shift from a theatrical release to digital. David Harbour, who plays Red Guardian in Black Widow said he would be fine with a Disney Plus release of the movie. But it turns out Disney has other plans.
According to Variety Disney just released big changes to the schedule. Here are the genre-related changes.
“Black Widow” was originally supposed to be released over the summer on May 1, 2020, and they announced a delay. It will now open in the winter on Nov. 6, 2020. It’s taking the spot that was originally reserved for “The Eternals.”
“The Eternals” was originally supposed to be released on May 1, 2020, and will now be moved to February 12, 2021.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was supposed to have an early release on February 12, 2021. That would have had the symbolic connection to the first day of the Chinese new year. But now it’s moving a few months to May 7, 2021. It’s taking over the spot from “Doctor Strange 2”.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was scheduled to open May 7, 2021. Now it’s opening later in the year on November 5, 2021. That was originally slated for “Thor 4”.
“Thor: Love and Thunder” was supposed to be released on November 5, 2021, but it’s moving to Feb. 18, 2022.
“Black Panther 2” will still debut May 6, 2022, but the unnamed “Captain Marvel 2” has been moved to July 8, 2022.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going through some big changes and there’s no way to find out how these date changes will affect the timeline of the MCU. But one thing is for sure, I’m glad I won’t have to watch Black Widow at home. It feels like it would be a waste even with surround sound.
