Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) |
Watch what happens when fans create a low-budget trailer from the biggest movie of the year.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is shaping up to be the biggest movie of the year. Also known as Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker Disney has been teasing this is the end of the story arc that began back in 1977. Directed by J.J. Abrams The Rise of Skywalker cast includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood including the late Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams.
The movie is set in another galaxy and a year before The Last Jedi. And follows the remnants of Resistance facing off against the evil First Order again. All while dealing with the past and the inner turmoil of the group. All the while the ancient battle between the Jedi and the Sith reaches a climax with the return of the Emperor. The Skywalker saga is finally reaching it’s end.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker tickets are now on sale. Early box office tracking predicts The Rise of Skywalker will gross between $175 million and $205 million in its opening weekend. The last Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi cost around $262 million to make and made a staggering $1.3 billion.
With all the money and hype surrounding the film it’s nice to take a breath and see something a little smaller. The comedy team with Dumb Drum recently made a low-budget or “sweded” shot-for-shot remake of the last trailer and it’s spectacular.
“Sweding” is a nickname given to a style of film making that recreates popular films or trailers using less expensive techniques. The results are wonderful. Even though it doesn’t use the expensive digital effects of Lucasfilm it does use an ingenious mix of cardboard and puppetry to achieve the same visual style. There are even some intentionally goofy changes like casting Lando as a woman with a strip of tape for a mustache.
What are the odds Rise of Skywalker is half as entertaining as this trailer? As Han Solo would say “Never tell me the odds.”
