The Internet is “Mad and Nude” About Rey’s Lightsaber Skills

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) – Rey (Daisy Ridley)

An image of Rey from the Star Wars movie is prompting a reaction that Pablo Hildago describes as “mad and nude”.

On September 16, 2019, the official Twitter account posted an image of Rey, played by Daisy Ridley,  holding a lightsaber with the caption “Something inside me has always been there. But now it’s awake”.

The photo shows Rey against a blue sky holding her lightsaber in a reverse grip. Many assumed it’s a photo from Star Wars Episode 9, but it’s actually from Star Wars: The Last Jedi and reused with a new caption for the marketing campaign. The quote is a line from Star Wars: Episode VIII when she’s talking to Luke Skywalker played by Mark Hamill. The full quote is “Something inside me has always been there… but now it’s awake, and I’m afraid. I don’t know what it is, or what to do with it, and I need help.”

Rey first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a scavenger living on the junk planet of Jakku fighting for scraps and survival. Since then she joined the resistance against the evil “First Order”. While never receiving formal Jedi training in the first movie Kylo pointed out she was strong in the force. “Stronger than she knows,” Kylo told Supreme Leader Snoke.

She later training with Luke Skywalker on the planet Ach-To the ancient birthplace of the Jedi Order. While the movie implied that she was only there for a few hours or days, the novelization The Last Jedi: Expanded Edition clarified it was over a week of training.

Since the first film, there have been vocal critics of the first female lead of a Star Wars film saying she was over-powered. The now-disgraced filmmaker Max Landis called her a “Mary Sue” which is a term used to describe women in media who have no training but are perfect for any task and challenge presented to them.

People have jumped on the photo as proof of her impossible skills with a lightsaber. “How”, they ask, “could she use a lightsaber in a reverse grip?” “It’s impossible!” they cry.

Pablo Hidalgo is an expert who literally wrote the book on Star Wars. Starting as an RPG fan he took it upon himself to catalog and index everything in the Star Wars universe. That led to him being hired by Lucasfilm as a consultant and member of their continuity “Story Group”. Hidalgo has written and co-written several official dictionaries and guides to the movies. He’s been called the  “Yoda” of Lucasfilm or “the Indiana Jones of Star Wars”. Even director J. J. Abrams contacted Hidalgo to fact-check his movie.

He had the perfect response to the controversy from his personal Twitter account.

This is the entirety of Rey’s backward grip in that one photo dudes are getting mad and nude about. 👍 pic.twitter.com/ZalXc0DzpX

    — Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) September 18, 2019

    He later added

Maybe part of that practice session could include a misstep, like cutting through a target she didn’t intend to. Could be played for laughs. Just spitballing here. Could be wrong.

    — Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) September 18, 2019

He later explained his “mad and nude” joke.

Anyone mad online is, within all likelihood, nude.

    — Pablo Hidalgo (@pablohidalgo) September 18, 2019

The “Red, Mad and Nude” joke became a meme back in the 2015 and has a whole page devoted to it on “Know Your Meme“. While there’s (thankfully) no photographic proof of the “mad and nude” trolls the story checks out.

Despite the anger and backlash about the movies, they continue to draw huge audiences. The Last Jedi was the highest-grossing film of 2017, the second highest-grossing film in the Star Wars franchise, the fourth highest-grossing film released by Walt Disney Studios, the sixth highest-grossing film in North America and the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time. Even the most ardent critics flock to theaters to watch the movies over and over again for proof of Rey’s “unexplained” skills.

So we can only assume when the movie comes out there will be a small army of mad and nude nerds storming the theaters. If that happens, you’ll want to skip the opening night. Or wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from the blinding glare of pale white skin.
