10 Most Shocking Moments in “Avengers: Endgame”

Those who claimed that Marvel movies had become formulaic and predictable weren’t ready for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Infinity War ends with the disintegration of some of the most beloved characters in the MCU including Black Panther, Nick Fury, and Spider-Man. Endgame turned up the heat with more plot twists than the previous twenty movies combined. Now that we’ve had a few weeks to digest it, let’s talk about the ten most shocking moments in Avengers: Endgame.

We called this article “shocking,” not because these moments were all bad. Some were shocking in how great they were. But a lot of them were moments where we just couldn’t handle it. Get ready to cry, laugh, and cheer all over again.

Spoiler Alert: This article will spoil some of the biggest moments of this epic movie. So if you haven’t seen it…

    10. Thanos Gets Beheaded

Most of us (Geek Twins included) expected Thanos to continue to be the main villain in Avengers: Endgame, just like he was in Avengers: Infinity War. Somehow, the surviving Avengers would get the Infinity Stones from Thanos, kick his butt, and bring back all those who were lost.

That’s why it blew us all away when we discovered Thanos had already destroyed the Infinity Stones by the time the Avengers found him. Thor responded by going for the head, like he should have done in Infinity War. As Thanos’ head rolled on the ground, we were all left wondering, “Now what?”

    9. Professor Hulk

When we last saw Bruce Banner in Infinity War, he had gotten his wish of being free of the Hulk, but not like he expected. Since the Hulk refused to let him change, that left Banner in charge, but also left him without his main weapon. That’s why we all wondered where he would be left in Endgame.

It turned out that Banner had found a way to merge with the Hulk to become Professor Hulk, Hulk’s body with Banner’s brain. The sight of a smiling Hulk, posing for selfies as he chows down on mountains of pancakes, while forever be burned into our memories.

    8. Fat Thor

Thor’s had a rough time during his last few movies. He lost an eye, Mjolnir, and Asgard itself in Thor: Ragnarok. He lost most of the Asgardians when Thanos attacked their escape craft in Infinity War. At the start of Endgame, he also discovered all his power and strength wasn’t enough to bring back his friends.

That left him in despair, but we didn’t realize how much in despair until his teammates tracked him to a seaside hovel and he turned around to expose a god-sized beer belly. This moment was bad for Thor’s fans, but all those who appreciated his “god bod” were surely horrified.

    7. Tony Stark’s Daughter

In the first Iron Man, Tony Stark was a playboy who ran his father’s weapons company, drank a lot, and caroused with a lot of women with no responsibility. We’ve seen him evolve over the movies to stop making weapons, marry his true love, and learn the power of teamwork.

But there was no greater symbol of Stark’s evolution than the moment his daughter came running out. Tony Stark with a daughter would have seemed like the worst idea ever in Iron Man. By Avengers: Endgame, it seemed only natural.

    6. Black Widow Dies

When Black Widow and Hawkeye went to get the Soul Stone, we knew something they didn’t: one of them wouldn’t be coming back. As Thanos learned the hard way, to get the Soul Stone, you have to sacrifice something you love. Which means someone had to die.

But let’s be real. We all thought it would be Hawkeye, right? I mean, he was kind of the butt of a lot of jokes, the one Avenger whose superpower was to shoot arrows really good. With the loss of his family, it seemed only natural to sacrifice Hawkeye for the good of the universe. Plus, Black Widow already has a movie in the works. Which is why it was so shocking when it was Black Widow who fell in slow motion to her death.

    5. Past Thanos Attacks

When Thanos lost his head at the beginning of the movie, we knew it couldn’t be the end. He had to come back to threaten the heroes, and he did, when Gamora traveled to the past and accidentally warned Thanos what they were doing. He proved himself a powerful enemy, so powerful that he came from the past to the future. We saw that coming.

But we didn’t expect him to re-enact the Infinity War from the first film, bringing legions of soldiers, ships, and Leviathans to Earth. When the portals opened, and he brought his whole army to threaten a handful of heroes, it seemed like the end. Fortunately, it wasn’t.

    4. Female Avengers Assemble

The final war between the forces of good against Thanos was amazing, but one of the greatest moments was a victory for female fans who had long had to watch the guys save the day. At one point, Spider-Man handed the new Infinity Gauntlet to Captain Marvel and wondered how she’d get it where it needed to go. That’s when Shuri said, “She’s not alone” and we saw the new wave of female heroes standing at the ready.

Nebula, Okoye, Valkyrie, Mantis, the Wasp, Scarlett Witch, and Pepper Potts in her Rescue armor all put the beatdown on the forces of evil, and it was great way of showing how women had moved from a token character to a literal wave of strong and powerful heroes.

    3. Captain America Picks Up Mjolnir

“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” That’s the inscription on the legendary hammer Mjolnir, and it means only Thor can lift it. At least, that was the case in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a brief exception made in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Vision lifted the hammer. It quickly dispelled fears that the robot might be evil, and also made them all look silly since they’d tried to lift the hammer hours earlier and failed.

That’s why our collective jaws dropped in Avengers: Endgame as Captain America grabbed Mjolnir and lifted it to fight Thanos with the hammer in one hand and the shield in the other. It proved Cap had what it took, and was one of the most amazing fights ever.

    2. Old Man Steve

Ever since Captain America, Steve Rogers has pined over his lost love, Agent Peggy Carter. Captain America promised her a dance, but he ended up frozen for most of the century and was awakened in time to find her an old woman. It’s not like there’s anything he can do about it, though, right?

Well, that’s what we all thought until Cap was trusted to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful place in history. When he didn’t come back, they turned to see an old man sitting nearby. It turned out Rogers had stayed in the past, living out a full life with his love Carter. Who says you can’t go home again?

    1. Iron Man Dies

When you call the movie “Endgame,” you can’t have everything tied up in a bow, can you? That’s why someone had to die. Of all the Avengers, it seemed fitting for it to be Tony Stark. After all, Iron Man started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s also no one who changed as much as Tony Stark. A sarcastic rich playboy became a hero who cared for others, and that’s why his time had to come in Avengers: Endgame.

Still, the moment when he used the last of his strength to say “I’m Iron Man” and snap his fingers left him a burned husk, and he died with Pepper Potts crying over him was a sad but poignant way to end the ten-year journey.
