‘The Suicide Squad” Movie Cast: Everything We Know So Far

Here’s everything we know so far about the cast and crew of the Suicide Squad movie sequel. in 2016 Warner Bros released Suicide Squad. It was a movie starring Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jay Hernandez, Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Karen Fukuhara (Katana), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and Jared Leto (Joker).

The movie was a box office disappointment but the studio always planned to make a sequel. It went through a variety of writers and directors. Now it’s gotten new life with the hiring of James Gunn. The movie, now called The Suicide Squad starts production in Atlanta this September with James Gunn set to write and direct and Peter Safran set to produce.

Here are all the confirmed and rumored cast members and crew.

    Director: James Gunn

James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) signed on to direct the Suicide Squad sequel after being fired by Marvel for offensive tweets that resurfaced. He also wrote the script.

Gunn was given the freedom to develop the movie without having to be a slave to the first movie. At first, it was announced as a reboot but that might not be the case.

    Idris Elba as TBA

Idris Elba (The Dark Tower) is the first cast member confirmed for the Suicide Squad movie. Elba was the first and only choice Gunn made for the movie.

Early reports said he’d be replacing Will Smith as the expert marksman and assassin Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot. Turned out to be a misfire. Just because he’s black doesn’t mean he has to play Deadshot. Variety reported he’s playing a new character.

“The team also did not want to feel as if it was disrespecting Smith, who helped bring this character to life for the first time, by replacing him with Elba. While many believe chances are still slim for a future return, the decision keeps the door open for Smith to possibly come back in future films, since his original reason for leaving had to do with scheduling and not creative differences.”

So in time, we’d find out who he plays.

    Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie plays the crazed criminal and former psychiatrist Dr. Harley Quinzel aka Harley Quinn. Robbie shined as the manic Harley Quinn and her performance was one of the most talked about part of the movie. After the movie, Warner Bros signed her up for four separate spin-off movies. Those have been pared back.

After Gunn signed on they announced the movie would be a reboot and have a new cast. After some early reports suggested Robbie might not be back Variety confirmed that she’s coming back for the new movie. Whether she plays Harley Quinn the same is hard to say. But her spin-off movie Birds of Prey just wrapped up shooting.

    John Cena (Rumored) as TBA

Variety confirmed that John Cena (Bumblebee) is in talks to join the rest of the Suicide Squad. Just like Idris Elba, we don’t know who he’s playing.

He could be a villain or a superhero. With his muscular build, my money is on a superhero.

    Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang

Jai Courtney (Terminator: Salvation) played George “Digger” Harkness / Captain Boomerang the Australian master thief who uses a boomerang. “For a long time I wasn’t even sure if [my return] was going to be the case or not,” Courtney recently told Collider. But after he got the script he knew he was in. Courtney coyly added. “It’s a great [script], I was surprised by everything [in it].”

Hollywood Reporter later officially confirmed he’s in the movie reprising his character.

Amanda Rabinowitz (Rumored) as Deputy Defense Secretary

Amanda Rabinowitz is an actress mainly known for her television work on shows like Riverdale. There’s no confirmation but IMDb lists her in the film as an unnamed Deputy Defense Secretary.

IMDb is sometimes right and wrong about casting so it’s just a rumor for now.

    Viola Davis as Amanda Waller

Viola Davis will be reprising her role as U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller. She’s the head of the “Task Force X” program. Waller is described as “ambitious and devious”, has “big plans”, and no “meta-human or military protocol is going to get in her way”.

For a while, it looked like she wasn’t joining the party, but then it was confirmed that she was coming back for the sequel/reboot.

Joel Kinnaman (Rumored) as Rick Flagg

Swedish-American actor Kinnaman (Robocop) played the leader of Task Force X. But there are mixed messages if he’s returning to the franchise.

“Gunn is said to be using mostly DC characters who did not appear in David Ayer’s 2016 film, although several are expected to return, including Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Rick Flagg, originally played by Joel Kinnaman, say sources,” Hollywood Reporter reported noting the conflict. “Another source, however, says Flagg is no longer in the follow-up.”

Discussing Film appeared to confirm his casting saying “we can confirm that Joel Kinnaman will reprise his role as Rick Flagg in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad'”. So we’ll have to wait and see.

Update: Kinnaman appears to confirm his return in an Instagram post.

David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man (Rumored)

David Dastmalchian is an actor best known for one of the smallest cameos in history. In The Dark Knight Dastmalachian played a crazy Arkham Asylum inmate. After seeing his name tag Arthur Dent threatens for information on his missing girlfriend, Rachael Dawes. It was a pretty impressive role that should have been forgotten (ex. the actor who played the fat guy) but was remarkable in its understated insanity. Since then he moved to a major role as Kurt in Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).

Hollywood Reporter confirmed the casting saying “Dastmalchian has closed a deal to star in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, with sources saying he will play the comic book villain Polka-Dot Man.”

Polka-Dot Man is an old 1962’s Detective Comics #300 villain. Abner Krill was a low-level crook who decided to use polka dots as a theme for his crimes. His costume’s spots hide various gimmicked items like buzzsaws, flying saucers, fists and bubbles he could fly in.

While the character’s been a joke since the 1960s he’s just the kind of fun obscure character James Gunn loves.

Michael Rooker (Rumored) as King Shark

There’s a rumor that veteran character actor Michael Rooker is joining The Suicide Squad movie as the villain known as King Shark. Rooker worked with Gunn on his first film Sliver and followed up most recently with Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2.  He’s been in every film Gunn’s directed.

It makes sense since Rooker was one of the biggest supporters of Gunn after he was fired by Marvel and praised his friend when The Suicide Squad was originally announced. After the news went viral he responded to the original report on his personal Instagram account saying “DA………..NOT!!!”

But he may still be in negotiations and is trying to cover his tracks. We’ll see.

Meanwhile, King Shark is a minor villain who’s basically a giant hammerhead shark with muscular arms and legs. The humanoid shark, known as Nanaue, first appeared in the DC comic Superboy #0 back in 1994 and fought several supervillains. He’s recently become more well-known thanks to his appearances on The Flash TV show.

Besides the rumored cast, there are also some rumored characters. The movie will reportedly feature Ratcatcher, Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, and a new alien female character.

The cast and crew are shaping up nicely and it could just be another hit for DC and Warner Bros.
