Black Panther had a lot of Marvel and comic book fans excited when the 2019 Golden Globe nominations were announced because it showed up in three categories including the coveted Best Motion Picture in the Drama category. Those same fans were disappointed when Black Panther lost all three. Let’s talk about why.
As the saying goes, it’s an honor just to be nominated. For a Marvel superhero movie to be up for Best Picture in any prestigious award was probably more than Marvel could have hoped for and will forever be a feather in its cap. Marvel is probably already printing Blu-Ray cases that say “Golden Globe Nominated Black Panther.”
That said, it didn’t win any of its categories and that sucks. Let’s take them one at a time.
1) BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE (Ludwig Göransson)
WINNER: First Man (Justin Hurwitz)
We haven’t seen First Man so we can’t say if it was that much better than Black Panther, but we can say that Black Panther wasn’t just a musical score. It was a symphony of African and modern rhythms that was amazing. It truly set a new standard not just for comic book movies, but American movies in general. It should have won.
2) BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE (“All The Stars”)
WINNER: “Shallow,” Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt
Honestly, we haven’t seen A Star is Born either so we can’t say if this song is better than “All the Stars.” But “All The Stars” was awesome. It’s far and away the best song in any Marvel movie for sure.
Still, considering A Star is Born is a popular musical, it’s understandable its signature song would be popular as well.
3) BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
WINNER: Bohemian Rhapsody
Okay, this was the big one, the one that would have sent Marvel into a whole new category if it had won Best Picture. But it lost to Bohemian Rhapsody.
Bohemian Rhapsody is…fine. It’s a nice movie. But Black Panther got robbed.
Here’s the thing: even the critics didn’t think Bohemian Rhapsody was that great a movie. Rotten Tomatoes currently has Bohemian at a 62% when all the reviews are put together. By contrast, Black Panther is at 97%. If Rotten Tomatoes had been the voting for the Golden Globes, Black Panther would have swept this award. Even A Star is Born should have won over Bohemian Rhapsody.
Oh well. Of course, there’s always the Academy Awards. And a Golden Globe or not, Black Panther is still a great movie.
EDIT: Fixed typo
