Black Panther (2018) – W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya), Okoye (Danai Gurira) |
“Black Panther” is a movie that has moved millions of audiences around the world, but the movie could have been even more powerful. A powerful scene with Okoye (Danai Gurira) and W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya) arguing in the Tribal Council Room about the future of Wakanda was cut. Director Ryan Coogler was sorry to cut it but it’s now online.

One subplot from the film is the romance between warriors Okoye (Danai Gurira) and W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya). The marriage got some screen-time but culminated in a powerful scene where W’Kabi has to choose between his loyalty to Killmonger or Okoye. The upcoming Blu-Ray release includes the clip.
Several things are revealed in the deleted scene. First, the two apparently talked about Okoye leaving the female warrior order “The Daughter” otherwise known as The Dora Milaje. Second, W’Kabi and Okoye had never talked about why he had agreed to side with Eric Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) before this.
The “Black Panther” movie has a theatrical runtime of 135 minutes, but it wasn’t always that way. Ludwig Goransson, the composer for the movie, told The Hollywood Reporter the original cut was over four hours long. So we can imagine a bunch of great scenes and powerful moments were cut. But only one still bothers Ryan Coogler and the editor.
“Hands down the most painful scene to cut was [one] with Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya,” “Black Panther” editor Michael Shawver told The Wrap. “Toward the end, after things go bad and Killmonger is in control and all that, we’re talking about, what are they going to do? What is Wakanda going to become?
“Those are two powerhouse actors and it was an incredible scene with so many layers to it — boyfriend and girlfriend, it was general and her advisor, all those things. That was painful.”
While the movie is expertly cut it is more powerful with this scene.
The Blu-Ray steelbook of “Black Panther” is available for pre-order at Best Buy and Target and scheduled for release Tue, May 15, 2018.
