Walt Disney’s “Black Panther” movie is still in the number one spot in its third week. It lost about 41% to make $66 million for a domestic box office gross of $502 million. The King is grossed $899.9M globally through Sunday. Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” is the 5th MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) title to reach $900M globally. This is after “The Avengers”, “Avengers: Age Of Ultron”, “Iron Man 3” and “Captain America: Civil War”. It’s a safe best “Black Panther will hit $1 billion worldwide by next weekend. Industry leaders say this one making a possible $100M-$120M in China.
Unsurprisingly, in South Africa, Black Panther is the No. 5 all-time release, and the highest-grossing movie ever in West and East Africa. Chadwick Boseman is also the top MCU release ever in the Netherlands.
Here’s the breakdown of the rest of the genre movies in the box office charts.
20th Century Fox’s new Jennifer Lawrence movie “Red Sparrow” debuted at the number two spot. It made $17 million across the US.
Paramount Pictures’ “Annihilation” dropped 4 positions to the number six spot. It lost about 49% to make $6 million for a domestic box office gross of $21 million. That movie just didn’t have the legs the studio was hoping for.
Sony Pictures’ “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is still going strong in the number seven spot. It lost about 21% from last week to make $4 million for a domestic gross of $393 million.
Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” gained about 24% from last week to make around $1.5 million for a total worldwide box office gross of $57 million. Expect that number to go up after it’s Oscar win.
Lionsgate’s “Early Man” is in the number 20 spot. It lost about -73% to make $0 million for a total worldwide box office gross of $8 million.
20th Century Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” moved to the number 21 spot. It lost about 51% since last week to make $470,922 in the sixth week with a total domestic gross of $57 million. The third, and final, movie in the “Maze Runner” trilogy has topped both “The Scorch Trials” and the original “Maze Runner” in the international box office gross of $279,022,294.
Walt Disney’s “Star Wars Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi” is in the number 26 spot. It made a little less than 28% since last week to make $252,689 for a total worldwide box office gross of $619 million in its twelfth week. This is another $1 billion hit in the “Star Wars” franchise.
Walt Disney’s “Thor: Ragnarok” moved to the number 34 spot. But it still added $118,574 to its total US sales of $315 million. The movie, which is out on Blu-Ray today pulled in a total $853,803,787 worldwide.
In case you forgot, Warner Bros.’s “Justice League” moved is still in about 101 theaters across the country and is in the number 42 spot. It lost about 40% since last week to make $0 million for a domestic box office gross of $229 million and $657,766,081 worldwide.
