Star Trek: The Animated Series – “The Practical Joker” (02×03) – Recommended

Official synopsis: “The Enterprise explores a mysterious cloud in space. After passing through it the ship’s computer begins acting in a bizarre fashion. It replicates Kirk’s shirts with ‘Kirk is a Jerk’ on the back, manufacturers devices that leave a black eye ring on Spock, and shoot cream pies out of the food devices. Things take a turn for the worse when McCoy, Sulu, and Uhura are trapped in the holodeck where they are beset by dangerous weather phenomena.”

This episode is hilarious. There are a few episodes that are known for being really funny. “Trouble with Tribbles” being the most well-known one. This one stands along side it as being hilarious. When the ship becomes sentient and starts “punking” the crew it’s hilarious. From giving Spock raccoon eyes to changing Kirk’s shirt to read “Kirk is a Jerk” there are laughs all the way through. Of course the ship doesn’t have any hands, so we’re not sure how it manages to play the pranks but that’s not really important. The jokes go from silly to lethal pretty quickly and the tension is very real.

Terminator: Genisys (2015) – Not Recommended

“When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future….”

While the movie looks great and has amazing action scenes the plot is non-sensical. I’m not opposed to the idea behind a reboot of the franchise  is brilliant as always. Arnold Schwarzenegger is as funny and brilliant as always and the aging Terminator T-800 nicknamed “Pops” and his performance is the standout. The other performances are good too while they can’t compare to Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor or Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese. Where the movie falls apart is the bizarre lengths they have to go to to explain the altered timeline and events. They have to return to the same tired trope of a Terminator being sent after the last Terminator and the Terminator before that. The idea was strange in T2 and is even more implausible in T5. They introduce some new elements and ideas that help to smooth out some of the plot holes, but not enough. The movie also introduces creepy relationships that emerge from the characters meeting themselves. *** SPOILERS ***John Connor meets his Dad Reese when he’s a kid. John meets his Mom Sarah when she’s a teenager. The scene when the grown up John calls Sarah and Reese “Mom and Dad” is beyond bizarre. The scene when Reese meets Connor as a little girl when he’s in love with her is unintentionally chilling.

    *** SPOILERS ***

If the characters were stronger and the movie added to the franchise it would have been worth it, but it’s only one more movie in the long list of failed Terminator sequels.

I hear you on the latest Terminator film. I should of known things were crap when good old Arnie is now being featured in British adds with a bunch of meercats with eastern European accents.

A good weekend to you, my esteemed friend.

      Gary 🙂

Hi guys, thanks for the link!! You know I have to say I love that Spider-Woman picture even though it's crazy. That's how I feel sometime when my toddler is running around. Oh please tell me that Michael Bay is not remaking 'The Birds.' It's a classic. I love the wine stoppers. Great geek bits this week guys.

    3. Alex J. Cavanaugh on July 11, 2015 12:53 pm

      Smartphone communicator – cool!
Will wait for the next Terminator to hit NetFlix.
Shame DC blew their chance when they were ahead of Marvel. Maybe the JLA movie will change all that.

    4. Pat Dilloway on July 11, 2015 6:11 pm

That Terminator thing reminds me of The Time Travellers Wife which was also unintentionally creepy. So in a Michael Bay Birds will the birds explode?

    5. Armchair Squid on July 11, 2015 11:40 pm

I really dig the KIRK IS A JERK shirt.

      See you on Twitter Tuesday!

    6. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2015 11:55 pm

Yeah I was thinking of the meadow scenes in that movie too. Probably a few birds will crash a plane or an oil tanker. A Bay movie without explosions is a day without sunshine.

Was there a Geek Bits last week? Did I just miss it?

    8. jeremy [retro] on July 12, 2015 1:22 pm

Bay's "BIRDS" won't explode… they will "TRANSFORM"… i know I was only a handful of people who liked the Terminator film for low expectations and just watching things with robot parts…

    9. DAVID WALSTON on July 12, 2015 5:25 pm

      Thanks for the link!

I'll see Terminator latter. The DC VS Marvel thing to me is just dumb. I feel that most comic fans are are just that, comic fans.

    10. spacerguy on July 14, 2015 9:48 pm

The Practical Joker is a memorable episode with all the wild pranks running rife aboard the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 – Majel Barret's infectious laughter really makes this one worth watching.
