Everything You Need to Know About Marvel’s Secret Warriors

Here’s everything you need to know about the super team “Secret Warriors”. The show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has often brought in elements from the comic books and it looks like they’re bringing in a whole new plot line. Last week, ABC confirmed that the superhero team “Secret Warriors” is coming to television. When actor Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Phil Coulson, was on Hey U Guys he dropped a major hint when he said, “[Coulson and Skye are starting] a new super-secret team of powered agents, which very much sounds like something that I know from the comics as Secret Warriors. Which is very exciting ’cause it’s a really cool, kind of rogue — not in the bad way — but quiet part of S.H.I.E.L.D. that gets very involved in some of the goings-on that happen around ‘Civil War,’ which is the ‘Captain America 3’ film that’s shooting right now, which is a truly great chapter in Marvel Comics.” But, who are the Secret Warriors and what does it mean for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Comic Origins

The team was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev and introduced in Secret Invasion #3 in 2008. So, the characters have been around a while  The comic origins of the Secret Warriors is familiar after watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers. In the comics, Nick Fury discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been compromised by the Shape Shifting Skrulls and H.Y.D.R.A. This is similar to the storyline in Winter Soldier when Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by Hydra. The alien Skrulls attack Earth and the major battle happens in Manhattan which is what happened in Avengers with the alien Chitauri.

To combat the threat, Fury builds a team of little known superheroes who are the children of super villains. They were organized into three teams : Team White, Black and Gray. Team White was led by the earthquake controlling Daisy “Quake” Johnson (daughter of Mr. Hyde) and was made up of super-strong Jerry “Stonewall” Sledge (son of Absorbing Man), super-fast Puerto Rican Yo Yo “Slingshot ” Rodriguez (daughter of the Griffin) and the teleporting Aborigine Eden “Manifold” Fesi. The series is a tie-in to issues of Mighty Avengers and part of the “Dark Reign” cross-over event. Which was a pretty awesome series by the way.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Easter Eggs

There are many “Easter Eggs” or clues to the storyline coming for fans of the comic books. Daisy Johnson, played by on TV by Chloe Bennet, was first introduced in Secret War #2 but played a major role in the Secret Warrior comics. In the season finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson hands Daisy a folder labeled “Caterpillars” to form a team “centered around people with powers” to recruit them and help them gain control of their skills. Daisy asks who else is on the list and he says, “Right now, just you. We’ll take it slow.” In the comics, the “Caterpillars” is the code name for the Secret Warriors.

Marvel says

“Season three of “SHIELD” will introduce new friends and foes based on the ‘Secret Warriors’ comic series when it premieres on Sept. 29. In the aftermath of SHIELD’s battle with Jiaying and the Inhumans, Director Coulson (Clark Gregg) will search the world for more powered people and assemble an extraordinary new team to deal with threats unlike the world has ever seen. However, the Agents of SHIELD will soon find out they’re not the only ones tracking down these new Inhumans.”

Differences Between Comics and TV Show

There are going to be major difference though since the comics focus heavily on Nick Fury and his history. There’s no way Samuel L. Jackson is going to be a series regular on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The dude costs too much. So, they’ll replace his character with Coulson for the show. They already have a semi-regular team of Inhumans for the show, so they may not use the same characters from the comics to make the team. It’s worth noting that Carl “Crusher” Creel, known as the Absorbing Man, has already appeared on the show played by Brian Patrick Wade in the season two episode “Shadows”. So, they could introduce his son as a character. They already have a teleporter on the show in Gordon (Jamie Harris), so they may not introduce Eden Fesi.

We’ll learn more about “Secret Warriors” and season three of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the “Marvel Television Presents” panel at SDCC on Friday, July 10 from 3:00 PM – 4:15PM in Ballroom 20. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC for season 3 on Tuesday, September 29 at 9 p.m. The synopsis for season 3 is:

“Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) embarks on a deadly new secret mission to protect the world from new threats in the wake of SHIELD’s wars with Hydra and a rogue faction of Inhumans.”
