King Kong (1933) – Fay Wray coloring page from The Lima News |
Usually coloring books are for little kids to make artwork for parents to stick up on the refrigerator, but back in 1933 coloring King Kong got you a free movie ticket! All you had to do was make your kid look at horrific scenes from the movie!
In the build up to what was the hottest movie of 1933, the Ohio newspaper The Lima News printed a series of coloring pages for kids from April 23 – 26, 1933. All six pictures had to be colored and submitted to win the tickets for the Sigma theater in Dayton.
They feature such kid-friendly scenes as women being tied up by savages, King Kong chowing down on a giant Pterodactyl and stabbing a Tyrannosarus [sic] Rex in the neck.

What do you think of the coloring pages? Would your kid’s have colored them for a free movie ticket?

The one with the woman is a bit much. My kids would've colored them. Probably a good thing I'm not a parent.
I want to get this book, I have some from when they handed out stuff at the premiere… it's a little jarring.
How quaint, little Johnny remembered to use the red crayon for the blood.
Darn. My nieces and nephew are too old for this now. I'm a great aunt. 🙂
Well it was the Great Depression so I guess they had more angst in their coloring books.
I guess rampaging dinosaurs were more kid-friendly back then.
The images are too small too, but you never know!
ROFL He’s quite the little nipper David
It is Jeremy. As an adult this stuff is awesome.
LOL I’m sure kid’s would love the dinosaurs though
They're all so pretty! Great activities for kids. These days, most would just keep them occupied…and quiet playing games on their ipads
