If R2-D2 Could Fly in the Original STAR WARS Trilogy [Infographic]

In Attack of the Clones, R2-D2 shocked the Star Wars community when he sprouted jets and flew through the factory at Geonosis. This was something he had never done in a movie before, and people started asking why he hadn’t flown in the original trilogy. The Expanded Universe explanation is that R2’s rockets had been damaged between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. But what if they hadn’t? Here are some changes we would have seen:

What If R2-D2 Could Fly in the Original STAR WARS Trilogy?

How else would R2-D2’s rockets have helped him in the original trilogy?

The question now is if he'll have the jets in the new trilogy. Of course by then R2 will be like 75 years old! Most computer equipment is outdated in like 6 months. Really he'd be the equivalent of a C64 by the time of the new movies, but I suppose he could be getting upgrades.

    2. Alex J. Cavanaugh on June 30, 2014 11:53 pm

Plot flaws like that are funny. That would've solved a lot of problems if he'd been able to fly.

But how would he carry 3PO? ๐Ÿ™‚

If R2 had not been captured by the Jawas, he'd have never hooked up with look, who'd never have taken the droid to Obi-Wan, then Leia. The Alliance would have never received the Death Star plans. Grand Moff Tarkin would have blown Yavin 4 away. The Alliance dies; the Empire rules.
If R2 could fly, then Darth Vader wins.

    5. Nigel Mitchell on July 1, 2014 2:51 pm

Good call. His flying would have ended the series

      What if C-3PO could fly?

    7. Tony Laplume on July 1, 2014 6:32 pm

One could argue that the years in between Attack of the Clones and the original trilogy, he lost his license to fly.

    8. DAVID WALSTON on July 1, 2014 9:53 pm

He and C3PO must be antiquated equipment by now.
