Was Maurice Right About the Best New TV Shows of 2012? [Television]

2012 is almost gone and I thought it would be fun to look back at my TV post 10 Fall Genre TV Shows You May Want To Watch In 2012 .

Above Image: Revolution (2012) Miles Matheson (Billy Burke), Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos)

How close I was to the final product just from the description and the trailer? How did I score?

    1. Do No Harm (NBC)

    I Said:
“This one sounds like a cross between Dr. Jekyll and House. Pretty cool. If you’ve never seen the British show Jekyll by the way. Look for it.”

    Was I Right? Dunno

The premiere got pushed to January 31, 2013. You should still look for BBCs Jekyll by the way.

    2. Revolution (NBC)

    I Said:

“It looks like a tired retread of the post-apocalyptic world, but I thought the same thing about Falling Skies and it’s heading for season two. When you add Jon Favreau and J.J. Abrams it sounds even better. On the other hand, Abram’s last show Alcatraz died on the vine.”

    Was I Right? Yes

The show is even worse than I thought. You can read my brother Nigel’s review here and final thoughts here. But, despite what we think, it’s popular. Just looking at ratings, Revolution got 22 percent or 1.5 million persons in total viewers and rank #1 in it’s time slot in
every key demographic. So, I was right. Just like Falling Skies, which I thought was “good in spots, but nothing exciting” in it’s first season and was renewed, Revolution inexplicably did well. It’ll probably be back for season two.

    3. Last Resort (ABC)

    I Said

“It could be interesting and I like the actors. I’m confused about the premise though. It sounds like an undersea drama, but they live on an island?”

    Was I Right? Yes

The actors, especially Andre Braugher as Capt. Marcus Chaplin is excellent. The writing is sharp and the characters are well-rounded. Unfortunately, the premise never got any less confusing. The show jumps from the island to the U.S. and never really found it’s footing. It’s going a full season, but will not be renewed. While the premiere got 9.1 million viewers it plummeted to 5.7 million viewers. Co-creator Shawn Ryan said, “Our ratings had been on the cusp, or really below the cusp, for a few weeks now. It didn’t come as a huge shock.” It doesn’t shock me either.

    4. The Following (FOX)

    I Said

“A new show starring Kevin Bacon and a bunch of organized crazies? Count me in. I wonder if he’s related to everyone?”

    Was I Right? Dunno

    Series premiere is January 21

    5. Insane or Inspired? (SyFy)

    I Said

“I dunno. It looks like another Internet clip show. It could be fun, but why would I want to hear what Brooke Hogan thinks?”

    Was I Right? Yes

I never watched it, but you can never have enough Internet clip shows. Like robot wives, they’re cheap and effective.

    6. Perception (TNT)

    I Said

“Didn’t they already try the schizophrenic detective with Jeff Goldblum’s Raines? The idea of hallucinations giving clues reminds me a bit of Awake which I loved.”

    Was I Right? Yes

Though Awake was canceled, this show’s been renewed for a second season. “Perception has captured the imagination of TNT’s audience of armchair detectives with wonderfully intricate cases, emotionally charged situations and, of course, a terrific cast led by Eric McCormack,” said Michael Wright, president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and TCM. “Daniel Pierce is a truly unique and fascinating addition to television’s pantheon of crime solvers. We look forward to seeing where Perception takes us next.” The viewers agree. The show is in my DVR list and I’ll probably get caught up with the show in the coming weeks.

So, how did I score? Looks like I was right for the 2012 season! When they announce the fall season for 2013, I’ll make another set of predictions and score them. Hopefully, I’ll get an A grade for next year too.

Overall, it was an OK year in television. Hopefully, next year will be better.

Did you watch any of the new shows on the list? What was your favorite new show for 2012?
