    • Written by James Gunn

In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

    Recap Superman

The film opens with the history of metahumans over three centuries ago, and how Jonathan and Martha Kent adopted a baby, Kal-El, and adopted him as their son, Clark. Then it explains that Superman intervened in a conflict between nations, but was defeated by the “Hammer of Boravia.” Then, we see Superman fall into the Arctic before whistling for Krypto to take him “Home” to the Fortress of Solitude.  Robots heal him with sunlight and play a video message from Kal-El’s parents.

In James Gunn’s “Superman,” Lois Lane finds Clark Kent cooking her “breakfast for dinner” for their three-month anniversary. They’re in a sweet start-up period in relationships, with one ahead of the other emotionally. Clark agrees to give Lois an on-the-record interview with Superman, playing like a modern screwball comedy with serious undertones. Lois questions Superman’s ethics about ending a war without US government approval. It’s a wonderful scene and really highlights their relationship, which is at the core of the movie.

Superman is a fun, goofy, irreverent, and heartfelt film by director David Gunn that combines comic book storytelling and modern commentary. The movie is funny and has tons of action. Gunn’s latest film is a visual spectacle, with decent twists and outstanding performances.

Gunn’s approach is not just about addressing anti-immigrant bigots but also stands for something bigger. The film is imbued with Gunn’s rascally sensibility and enthusiasm for the material. The latest superman film feels like the end of superhero films and feels like the beginning of something new.

However, the universe is thin, constrained, and undefined, and the plot is convoluted and confusing. Gunn’s concerned with society’s struggle to accept the possibility of inherent goodness. The new DC Universe gets off to a promising but unsteady start with this reboot.

Overall: Watch Superman (2025) Written and Directed by James Gunn

The technical aspects of the film are exceptional, with Gunn and composers David Fleming and John Murphy utilizing John Williams’s iconic theme. The film’s greatest strength lies in its humanity, giving viewers hope for the present and future. The superhero’s selfless resilience to do good is a beacon of hope, inspiring others to strive for the same. I’m giving Superman (2025) 4 1/2 stars.

    4.5 out of 5 stars
