What’s Holding Up Jurassic Park 4?! [News]

Way back in 1993, Steven Spielberg made the classic Jurassic Park. For more than 20 years, the franchise has been trying to live up to that. Frankly, Jurassic Park II was weak. The third was slightly better, since it took more from the books by author Michael Crichton.

It’s been almost ten years since Jurassic Park III (2002). Back then, director Steven Spielberg said that he planned to produce Jurassic Park IV and director Joe Johnston would direct.

So, where’s our stinkin’ movie already? It turns out, the problem is the script.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy recently told Coming Soon the problem.

“Writing, writing, writing.” Kennedy said, “It’s really hard to keep these things going when there’s an expectation and a desire by the public and the audience to keep certain franchises going. As filmmakers, we often sit there going, ‘Okay. We have to answer the question, “Why do another one?”

“If you can’t answer that question, you shouldn’t be doing it. It’s tough. We’re trying to come up with a story that makes sense and isn’t going to disappoint people and is, hopefully, going to get people excited and reinvigorate the franchise. We’ve got to start with a script and the story.”

The pressure is really on. The first was a masterpiece, and with Crichton dead, it’s a challenge to match his original vision.

Yeah, Nutschell. Make the plot simple and airtight I say.

I'm glad they're taking time to work on the script. I wouldn't want to watch a movie with tons of plot holes :S

It's been so long since the first one, Tony, it's possible to make it fresh for a new audience. Using the dinosaurs perspective would be fun. Maybe actually give them character. Great point.

The holdup is obviously the script, because they're trying to figure out how to make a sequel that makes sense. Ironically the longer they take the more likely people will find a new Jurassic Park special. I think, especially with the rise of Pixar, that it might be wise to try and embrace the perspective of the dinosaurs, as much as that's possible, rather than making them simply the rampaging monster villains.

That's a tough call Jeremy. So many great scenes in the first movie!

we know they are dinosaurs… now they have to make us remember the magic of the first one… and the second… forget the third!

Pat, agreed. Actually, a reboot isn't a bad idea. Maybe using nano-tech instead of genetic engineering

Alex, that doesn't stop a lot of movies does it?

As soon as I saw the post title, my first thought was "A script? A GOOD one?"

    10. Pat Dilloway on October 3, 2012 3:13 pm

We didn't need Jurassic Parks 2 or 3 so we really don't need a fourth. It'll probably end up being a prequel or reboot anyway.

    11. jeremy [retro-zombie] on October 3, 2012 3:13 pm

oh, my i forgot about the reboot option… that scares me.

Reboots are popular in Hollywood nowadays. Maybe they should do that and make it more loyal to the source material (The original novel)
