The 11 Most Terrifying Laughs In Sci-Fi Movie History [Lists]

The Dark Knight (2008) Joker (Heath Ledger)

They say laughter is the best medicine, but you don’t ever want to hear these laughs.

The best villains laugh. That’s because we unconsciously associate laughter with good things and it’s jarring to hear someone you hate laughing.

Here now are the most, terrifying, chilling and freakiest laughs in Sci-Fi movie history.

    11. Dr. Giggles in Dr. Giggles (1992)

Dr. Giggles is a 1992 slasher film directed by Manny Coto, and starring Larry Drake as the homicidal Doctor Evan Rendell Jr. (Dr. Giggles) and Holly Marie Combs as the hero. Dr. Giggles had a psychotic and terrifying giggle.

    10. Joe P. Cox in Robocop (1987)

    You probably don’t
recognize the name Joe P. Cox (Jesse Goins). Most people call him “That
Black Guy in Robocop”. I’ll bet you remember his laugh though. It’s hilarious, but
    hides a deep seated sadism.

    9. Joker in Batman (1966)

Cesar Romero’s take on the Joker in the Batman TV series was the first attempt to capture the “Clown Prince of Crime.” His laugh was more of a cackle than a laugh and he sounds absolutely insane. It didn’t hurt that the Joker has a Hispanic accent.

    8. Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in Dune (1984)

Kenneth McMillan played the monstrous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in the David Lynch film. The man’s insanity is typified in his laugh.

    7. Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

Jabba the Hutt’s laugh is booming powerful and terrifying. He is voiced to perfection by Larry Ward.

    6. Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002)

In the movie, Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe) goes insane after subjecting himself to an experimental gas. The first time we hear the Green Goblin cackle we believe it.

    5. Predator in Predator (1987)

In the Predator film, the alien gets the last laugh on Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Literally.  The most terrifying part is he imitates the laugh of one of his victims: Billy (Lonny Sondheim).

    4. Joker in Batman (1989)

When Jack Nicholson played the Joker in the first Batman movie he set a new standard. His laugh gets stuck in your head and refuses to leave.

    3. Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

The Emperor is many things. He’s evil. He’s cruel. He’s twisted by the Dark Side. But he loves a good joke. The fact that he finds humor in the death of his victims makes him even more terrifying.

    2. Joker in The Dark Knight (2008)

    In The Dark Knight
Heath Ledger achieved a terrifying laugh for the Joker.  The scariest part is that no
matter what he’s doing it sounds like The Joker is having fun.

    1. Max Jenke in The Horror Show (1989)

Max Jenke (Brion James) is “the most feared mass murderer in American history” and for some reason he also had the most feared laugh in movie history. He compared his laugh to a hyena, but it’s so irritating you find yourself begging him to stop.

What’s the most terrifying laugh you’ve ever heard?

Jabba's laugh was pretty awesome. It was freaky after the Joker died in "Batman" when he landed on the ground and kept on laughing through a voicebox or something. I always wondered if that meant he wasn't actually dead, like maybe someone else had fallen off the church steeple.

What about Tom Curry as Darkness in Legend?

    3. Arch Nerd on June 26, 2013 4:26 pm

Sorry Tim. Curse you auto spell.

    4. DAVID WALSTON on June 26, 2013 4:50 pm

Nice list. How about Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula?

    5. L. Diane Wolfe on June 26, 2013 9:07 pm

Brion James has such a deep voice and it was weird to hear that high-pitched laugh from him.

    6. MPax on June 26, 2013 9:31 pm

Ooo, on the Tim Curry mention. I guess it's not quite a laugh the alien does as the end of Prometheus. Ra's laugh in Stargate was chilling

    7. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:11 am

Good one. I haven't seen the movie in a while but Tim Curry is always creepy.

    8. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:12 am

I wondered the same thing until I took a closer look at the blood under his head. Scary though.

    9. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:13 am

Grandpa did have a very scary mad scientist laugh.

    10. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:14 am

Agreed L. Diane. Maybe that's what made it so terrifying. It seemed to come from someone else.

    11. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:14 am

      Good choice Alex

    12. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:15 am

Ra did have a chilling laugh MPax

    13. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:16 am

Dracula is another excellent choice David

    14. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:16 am

Now that you mention it they had some pretty demented laughs Jeremy.

    15. Maurice Mitchell on June 28, 2013 3:17 am

      No doubt Arch Nerd.
