If you saw The Cloverfield Paradox, you probably have some confusion about the monster from the original movie. Without spoiling anything here or getting into theories, we’ll just say that Paradox has some connection to where the creature came from. However, that connection is not what J.J. Abrams and his crew originally intended.
In case you haven’t seen it, Cloverfield was about a group of partygoers trapped in New York City while a gigantic monster attacked. In the movie, the main characters go through numerous assaults and even come face-to-face with the creature at one point, but there’s never a real explanation of where the creature came from.
In fact, the origin of the monster was revealed but not in the movie. If you wanted to find out where it came from you had to go through the movie’s viral marketing campaign.
The only hint in the movie came at the end when we saw a flashback/clip of a previous trip to Coney Island. If you looked closely in the background, you saw this:
That little speck was the subject of a lot of speculation included the idea that it was an alien spaceship. It’s not. That’s actually a damaged Japanese satellite called ChimpanzIII.
The Cloverfield monster is not an alien creature, but a prehistoric creature that lived in the deep oceans of Earth. We don’t know much about it other than that it has a huge lifespan, so much so that the Cloverfield monster we saw was just a baby, even though it was thousands of years old.
The monster fed on an addictive substance that came to be known as Seabed’s Nectar, a natural steroid that causes increased cell division and growth. In the world of Cloverfield, the Cloverfield creature and Seabed’s Nectar were discovered by a marine biologist for a Japanese mining company called Tagruato. Tagruato killed the marine biologist and his family to hide his discovery and built the Chuai station over the creature under the guise of oil drilling.
Taguato began using Seabed’s Nectar as the secret ingredient in their popular Slusho frozen drink. The company’s efforts to study the creature, along with the ChimpanIII satellite that crashed into it, caused the Cloverfield monster to wake up and attack New York City.
Of course, all that has changed and been rewritten in the wake of The Cloverfield Paradox.
