At the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel dropped a huge bomb on the crowd when announcing the next slate of movies. It was revealed that Natalie Portman will be taking over the role of Thor from Chris Hemsworth in the next installment, called Thor: Love and Thunder. How is it possible? What was the inspiration for the change? Let’s go over all the details.
The last few Marvel movies put Thor through a rough time. His hammer Mjolnir and the world of Asgard were both destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, most of the surviving Asgardians were killed in the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, and he gained a ton of weight in Avengers: Endgame. The last we saw him, Thor had joined the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Many speculated that this was the end of Thor’s traditional role, and a few even speculated that Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) would be taking over since she was named ruler of New Asgard. Instead, Natalie Portman (who has played Jane Foster in the series) will take up the hammer. This announcement wasn’t as big a surprise as it could have been to comic book fans, because they already went through the initial shock of seeing a female Thor in the comics.

During the 2014 “Original Sin” storyline, Thor became unworthy when he realized the Norse gods didn’t deserve to be worshipped. He lost the power to wield Mjolnir, but the hammer was soon picked up by another, Jane Foster. While battling cancer, Foster took on the powers and name of the All-New Thor while the Asgardian Thor became known as Odinson. She was the new Thor for several years before sacrificing herself in 2018, and the mantle of Thor went back to Odinson.
It’s unknown how much of the All-New Thor storyline will be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s exciting to see how Marvel paved the way for diversity in the comics and is leading the same charge in the movies.
