Recap The Institute (2025): S1E02 – “Shots for Dots”

The opening song “Shout” remix actually makes sense now. Good job, show. Iris’s (Birva Pandya) creepy graduation ceremony to the “Back Half” marks the start of the second episode of The Institute. It feels a lot like Severance in a good way. Watching Ms. Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker) dance around is genuinely endearing. Kalisha (Simone Miller) is interested in the escape plan, too. Maureen (Jane Luk) and Nicky Wilholm (Fionn Laird) feel sorry for Iris as she breaks down in tears over her “Almost Home” cake, but Sigsby and Tony (Jason Diaz) are overly eager. The scene also lets us delve a little into the lives of the kids. Are Sha and Nicky dating? Even she doesn’t know.

Meanwhile, back in town, Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) unwittingly meets Norbert Hollister (Brendan Beiser), the owner of the town’s only hotel—another person talking about the previous “Night Knocker” Officer Gullickson. At the police station, Wendy Gullickson (Hannah Galway) tells him that two armed bandits are coming to attack the town, but he refuses to take a pistol. Is he as clumsy as Deputy Barney Fife? No, he probably has PTSD over the kid he shot. He tries to joke with her about “oat milk lattes,” but their relationship remains tense. She’s not amused at “her big city cop” ways, but she seems to be warming up to him. Kind of like the lizard that he met back at the Stanton Hotel.

Regarding the whole “killing Michelle” incident, the mysterious leader of the Institute contacts Sigsby and Trevor Stackhouse (Julian Richings) on an old 1960s speaker phone. While she and Stackhouse have different objectives, they both need more recruiters (snatch team leaders) and children (targets). To Stackhouse’s dismay, Sigsby convinces the leader to add Kate to the recruiting team. There’s tension between them as he throws her under the bus for her security clearance.

Luke’s first experiment is coming up soon, and that psychopath Tony is ecstatic. Maybe he wants to tell that “what did five fingers say to the face” joke again (slap). He tells him not to be a “Beta Male” by saying “can’t,” so he’s an Andrew Tate fan.

In the chair, Luke tries to persuade Dr. Daniel Hendricks (Robert Joy) to stop the procedure by quoting the Hippocratic oath (“Primum Non Nocere”), but the doctor feels superior because he supports the Institute’s moral goals. The exam requires Luke to notify them whenever he notices dots in his vision. Despite feeling ill, Luke manages to move a chair and a box after much pressure. “No one’s gonna believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself,” psycho Tony says.

We cut back to Tim in town as local crazy lady Annie (Mary Walsh) is chasing Mrs. Kelly Sloane (Sandy Lee Cranston) throughout town in a panic. She believes her daughter Zoe was murdered, even though everyone says she died in an accident. Tim manages to calm her down. But Officer Drew Reynolds (Dan Beirne), who despises Annie, doesn’t appreciate it. She warns Tim to check the pinky toes to see if they’re…an alien? Who knows.

Maureen (Jane Luk) brings Luke back to the rec room at the institute and checks on him. George Iles (Arlen So), meanwhile, is in even worse shape. He is currently in the final phase before moving on to the Back Half, known as the “Dream Box.” It encourages a TK (telekinetic) to acquire TP (telepathic) powers and a TP to acquire TK powers. To end the anguish in this exam, they must align the lights. Luke’s tired of Tony playing around with Nicky, so he decides to take action.

Under the guise of playing basketball, Nicky and Luke leave. After discussing their alternatives, Luke concludes that turning a staff member to assist them in escaping is their only chance. Additionally, he spots a factory that releases a lot of smoke each week.

Meanwhile, Wendy and Tim talk about Zoe’s passing. Strong currents can be found in the “Red Steps” (they’re not actually red), a prohibited area along the town river. Zoe was among a group of teenagers who were swept off after getting intoxicated years ago. A few days later, they were all found dead. Annie, who arrived in town much later, concluded that it was not an accident. Wendy dismisses Annie’s ranting as paranormal delusions, but Tim is intrigued by her because she knew personal details about him. Is Annie a TP? Plus, we find out that Tim’s mom had panic attacks and delusions, so he learned to calm her down.

In a dirty storage room, Sigby meets Hendricks , who’s just taken the “little blue pill” (“Better living through chemistry”). Her disgust for him is obvious, but they’re obviously hooking up. More than I needed to know.

George’s ability to move a coin shows that his TK abilities have grown stronger. Luke encourages him to work on moving larger objects. For 15 days, the majority of recruits stay in the First Half. Luke says they need to find a weak link in the staff using M.I.C.E. (Money, Ideology, Coercion, Ego). To harm the staff, they must do more than just increase their power. Maureen has been gracious enough to let them know about the CCTV’s blind spots, but Kalisha wants to turn her. However, Kalisha lacks the strength to read secrets with her thoughts.

Luke informs them that Avery Dixon (Viggo Hanvelt), the newest recruit, will be arriving shortly, while they are unsure of what to do. Additionally, Nicky makes fun of Kalisha for being cautious when kissing, and we find out that she recently contracted chicken pox. She’s kissed Luke, like 500 times, so I’m not sure what’s going on there. Luke begins timing the nocturnal patrols later that evening.

Checking back on Tim, he goes to the gas station before starting his shift. He becomes friends with Dobira, the proprietor. Annie wants to tell him about the Institute, so he follows up to see how she’s doing. There are gunshots to interrupt them. The two state robbers have made a spectacular appearance. By pretending to have a gun, Tim scares them away. Gutaale Dobira (Tawiah Ben McCarthy) has been shot, but he manages to get their license plate.

Back at the main location, Hendricks is confronted by Stackhouse as he goes to bed. We find out that the Institute has little interest in Hendricks’ PC track as they make their way to their accommodations. But Stackhouse is, and he suggests that he has some interested third-party buyers. Since Sigsby is the Institute’s guy, they are to keep her out of it.

Stackhouse is also aware that Hendricks and Sigsby are hooking up, but Hendricks has no qualms about lying to her because she treats him like crap. And Luke appears to be a possible contender for the PC track. Sigsby overhears them, which is lucky (or unlucky).

Meanwhile, Drew is the first person on the shooting scene, and Tim is quick to react and stops Dobira’s bleeding. Tim has to guide Drew through the necessary actions while he becomes agitated. Tim encourages Drew to claim the glory after the ambulance arrives. But the deputy knows that Tim was the true hero.

Avery is crying in the corridor when the First Half children awaken. Kalisha finds out that he’s a powerful TP as George escorts him to his room. When they recognize that he is their pass to freedom, they share a smile at the end of The Institute Episode 2.

Overall: Watch The Institute (2025): S1E02 – “Shots for Dots”

Building on some of its stronger core concepts, I would argue that this episode was marginally better than the debut. The conversation is still a little awkward, and the gap between our knowledge and ignorance still has the potential to swing in the direction of frustration. However, some form is starting to take shape, and I believe that the more time we spend with Tim and the children, the more we will start to genuinely hope that they will find the truth about everything.

Although the show’s main mysteries are long-term in nature, it’s a good idea to emotionally engage us before delving into a sci-fi thriller. It could be one of the summer’s sleeper hits if the remaining episodes can maintain this moody, enigmatic tone with a dash of dark humor and slow-reveal horror.

I’m giving this episode 4 out of 5 stars
