Recap: The Institute (2025): S1E01 – “The Boy”
The two-part debut of The Institute on MGM+ focuses on disturbing concerns and conspiracy theories about the government. The opening credits have the most moving cover of the Tears for Fears song “Shout” ever made. Not sure if it fits, but there you go.
The slow-burning character drama is the type that Stephen King adaptations typically master when they’re at their best. Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman), a talented 14-year-old boy from Minneapolis, is an extremely bright child who dreams of going to MIT. His loving parents agree to move for him. But all that goes out the window when he’s kidnapped at night in the opening scene of the episode.
A squad of professionals led by Michelle, an experienced Institute agent, kidnaps him. Luke wakes up in what looks to be his bedroom, but it’s a replica at an Institute facility. Kalisha (Simone Miller) explains that it’s a facility for kids with telekinetic (TK) or telepathic (TP) skills.
Luke soon learns that the Institute uses a system of rewards (tokens) and punishments for behavior. He encounters Avery (Viggo Hanvelt), Nick (Nicky), and Kalisha, three other prisoners who have all experienced trauma. Ms. Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker), the Institute’s incredibly cool and collected director, portrays herself as a guardian of the common good, but her authority is founded on emotional manipulation and authoritarian control.
Meanwhile, Michelle (Elise Bauman) becomes involved with a journalist named Kate (Jordan Alexander) who prys into her mysterious job. Simultaneously, in the other thematically connected subplot, Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes), a former Boston Police Department officer with an impeccable record but haunted by his past alcoholism. He has moved to Dennison River Bend, a small town, in search of a more tranquil existence. He is a “Night Knocker,” an informal patrolman of sorts, there. There may be a relationship between what is occurring at the Institute and something more, as evidenced by his early interactions with town leaders and residents.
By the end of the episode, Michelle is dead after a confrontation resulting from her cooperation in joining the Institute’s grab squad. Despite its briefness, this subplot contributes to the system’s internal conflict.
Overall: Watch The Institute (2025): S1E01 – “The Boy”
This is another entry in the history of Stephen King’s failed shows based on his work, but it may just be the best. Not that there’s a whole lot to choose from, but it’s the best since Castle Rock back in 2018.
The show has a dark and oppressive feel. But there are a bunch of bizarre and fun characters in the town, including the conspiratorial Annie. She’s a weird old lady who checks his fillings for listening devices but knows his childhood nickname and a dude with a toad. The Institute has some wonderful characters as well, including the sadistic staff member Tom, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Kalisha, and the rebellious Nick.
The adaptation of Stephen King’s novel offers a slow-burning character drama with an intriguing premise and set-ups. However, the first episode may not fully coalesce, but the series is worth checking out for fans of Stephen King stories. Despite its intriguing premise, it may not be enough to sign up for your 103rd subscription-based streaming service. But if you’re already one of the 205 million subscribers, then it’s worth it.
