Here are the new sci-fi TV shows and movies that star people of color on Netflix in December of 2021.
Below is a comprehensive list of every new movie and TV show scheduled to drop on Netflix for the final month of the year.
Full List of What’s New on Netflix — December 2021
Available December 1
Lost in Space: Season 3 (Netflix Series)
Netflix Synopsis: “After crash-landing on an alien planet, the Robinson family fights against all odds to survive and escape. But they’re surrounded by hidden dangers. In an epic final season, the Robinsons’ survival instincts kick into hyperdrive as they race to reunite and protect Alpha Centauri from a robot invasion.”
If you haven’t been watching this reboot of the 1960s show you’re missing out. The show is chock full of great moments and characters. It’s a wild ride. One of the stand-out performers is Afro-Canadian actress Taylor Russell as super-smart Judy Robinson the step-daughter of the white lead. She was earned a Saturn Award nomination for “Best Supporting Actress in Streaming Presentation” in 2019.
Knight Rider: Seasons 1-4
Synopsis: “A lone crimefighter battles the forces of evil with the help of a virtually indestructible and artificially intelligent supercar.”
The show needs no explanation as it’s solidified in pop culture history. But it’s notable that in the fourth and final season of the series, Peter Parros joined the cast as streetwise mechanic Reginald “RC3” Cornelius III.
Knight Rider 2000 (1991)
Netflix Synopsis: “As a new millennium dawns, Michael Knight gets a new crime-fighting partner, KITT gets a fresh look, and both get a new criminal conspiracy to solve.”
The television movie attempted to bring Michael Knight and his car into the “future”. While the movie is forgettable it does star former football player Eugene Clark as Officer Kurt Miller. Lou Beatty Jr. guest stars as the black mayor Harold Abbey.
Minority Report (2002)
Netflix Synopsis: “In a near-future where murders can be seen before they happen, the head of the Pre-Crime unit goes on the run when he’s accused of an imminent homicide.”
Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise weaved this classic science-fiction film that holds up to multiple viewings. It also stars Anna Maria Horsford as Casey, Klea Scott as a Pre-Crime Cop, and Steve Harris as Jad Watson an agent who assists Anderton in the temple.
Tremors (1990)
Netflix Synopsis: “Pals Val and Earl discover their remote desert town of Perfection is under attack by giant burrowing worms that are fast, smart and so very, very hungry.”
This sci-fi horror comedy film is one of my favorites. The small cast is rounded out by two character actors who steal every scene they’re in. Victor Wong plays store owner Walter Chang, who names the creatures “Grabboids”. Tony Genaro plays the gruff Miguel who says they shouldn’t “vibrate”.
Available December 3
Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous: Season 4 (Netflix Family)
Netflix Synopsis: “Six teens invited to attend a state-of-the-art adventure camp on Isla Nublar must band together to survive when the dinosaurs break out of captivity.”
The fourth season of the Jurassic World spin-off is one of my son’s favorites. One great thing about the show is the diversity of the cast including several black, middle-eastern, and Asian characters played by Jenna Ortega, Benjamin Flores Jr., Kausar Mohammed, Ryan Potter, Paul-Mikél Williams, and more.
Available December 15
The Giver (2014)
Netflix Synopsis: “In a future society without hardship or free choice, young Jonas discovers a powerful truth and becomes determined to expose it.”
This movie was a box office flop but worth watching if you already have a subscription. It’s about a dystopian colorless world of conformity and contentment. As is usual in these YA films the main character sets out to learn the truth about his world. South African actor Thabo Rametsi as Robbie and Renate Stuurman stars as Dinah.
Available December 24
Don’t Look Up (Netflix Film)
Netflix Synopsis: “Two astronomers go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. The response from a distracted world: Meh.”
Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Jonah Hill are the big stars for this sci-fi black comedy but lookout for a few big names of color. Tyler Perry plays morning show host Jack Bremmer, rapper Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi plays DJ Chello, Himesh Patel plays Phillip and Hettienne Park stars as Dr. Calder.
The Silent Sea (Netflix Series)
Netflix Synopsis: During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, space explorers try to retrieve samples from an abandoned research facility steeped in classified secrets.
Thanks to Squid Game Korean dramas are hot now. This South Korean sci-fi mystery thriller series starring Gong Yoo, Bae Doona, and Lee Joon. The series is an adaptation of the 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquility written and directed by Choi Hang-yong.
Available December 26
Lulli (Netflix Film)
Netflix Synopsis: A brilliant but self-centered medical student seems incapable of listening to others — until an accident gives her the ability to hear people’s thoughts.
This quirky comedy has a sci-fi twist and stars Sergio Malheiros as Julio and Yara Charry as Elena.
Lots of great stuff is coming to the streaming platform so check it out.
