In a way, the 2021 Mortal Kombat remake was a prequel. It followed Shang Tsung (Chin Han), the malevolent leader of the Outworld, as he attempted to eliminate every fighter from Earth so they could not participate in the tournament of the same name. Naturally, he failed, and the competition is already underway in Mortal Kombat 2, which will be available on October 24. Furthermore, it serves as the main plot point of the entire film.
“They keep score throughout the movie,” Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s a visual representation of who is winning… It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”
Johnny Cage, a well-known and quirky figure from the computer games and previous film adaptations, was only hinted at in that first movie via a billboard for his “Citizen Cage” movie. But Karl Urban, star of The Boys, formally joins other Earthrealm champions.
Plus, viewers will be kept alert by the wacky cast of characters. Every central character from the previous movie is returning, along with a handful that passed away. Among them are Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Bi-Han / Noob Saibot / Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), and Kano (Josh Lawson), all of whom were slain. We don’t yet know how, but they’re back.
Cage’ll join them, reportedly the audience’s main attraction this time, Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), and Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), whose entrances were kept a mystery until today. “[Johnny Cage’s] integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores,” Boon said. “He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He’s adding his own flare to it, but I think it’ll feel fresh. There’s like a novelty factor in there.”
However, when the tournament field continues to shrink and a champion is chosen, we have to imagine that several individuals will be brutally killed. That is also crucial because if Earth loses the tournament, it will be the tenth consecutive time that the Outworld has taken control of the planet. In Mortal Kombat 2, the world’s literal destiny is at risk. Who among the warriors of Earth will come to our aid and rescue us all? In a few months, we’ll know.
