The recently unveiled trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the next television series, offers fresh details on what to expect from this avant-garde addition to the Star Wars film and television franchise. The premise of Skeleton Crew, the next installment of Star Wars’ impending television series, has already been shown to be intriguing. It has been established that the program occurs between Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the New Republic timeline. This implies that the program will run alongside the Mandalorian period.
Beyond Skeleton Crew’s position in the Star Wars timeline, Jude Law’s role as Jod Na Nawood has been confirmed by the franchise. Jod Na Nawood has been described as a “whole new kind of Jedi” and appears to possess the Force; however, this has been questioned. Little more than the fact that Nawood would be traveling with a group of kids who are stranded in the galaxy was previously disclosed. More information about Skeleton Crew has surfaced thanks to the new trailer.
Watch the trailer below:
1. Children from the Skeleton Crew Become Stranded in the Star Wars Galaxy
The trailer later shows Old Republic credits for Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), who seems to command this group of children. She most likely found them aboard the ship, which suggests that the craft is also from that era. However, it seems that the spaceship predates the Clone Wars. The children are escorted throughout the teaser by a droid that doesn’t seem old enough to be from the Clone Wars. If the droid is indeed on the spacecraft as it looks, it could have been constructed in the Old Republic period, long before the Clone Wars.
There are intriguing ramifications for Jude Law’s character as well. Given how he interacts with the kids, Jod Na Nawood is a resident of Wild Space. His Jedi credentials are called into question by this. If he is a Jedi, where did he receive his training, and who was his master? Did he somehow become a Jedi after Order 66, or did he have some link to the Jedi Order? The answers to these questions will be fascinating.
2. Children Discover an Ancient Republic Ship
The new teaser for Skeleton Crew shows that the kids are lost after they happen across an old ship, even though it was already known that they would be lost in the galaxy with Jude Law’s character. Several clues in the trailer indicate this is an Old Republic ship, even though the ship’s precise past is yet unknown. The ship is hidden and hasn’t been used in a long time, for starters. Given its timeframe, this would most likely put Skeleton Crew in the Old Republic era.
Wim, who appears to be in charge of this group of kids, is later shown to have Old Republic credits in the trailer. He probably discovered them on the ship, which further implies that the ship is from that time period. But the ship appears to have existed before the Clone Wars. Throughout the teaser, the kids are accompanied by a droid that appears too ancient to be from the Clone Wars. The spacecraft may have been built during the Old Republic era, long before the Clone Wars, if the droid is present on it as it appears.
3. Children End Up Searching for a Lost Treasure
Jude Law and the youngsters in the new Skeleton Crew trailer also look for lost riches, a significant departure from the opening scene where they appear to be fearful children attempting to return home. This is probably related to Nawood. “I’ll get you home,” he tells the kids in the trailer. “We’ll form an alliance.” The trade-off is presumably that Nawood will assist the children in returning home, but first, they must assist him in finding the riches he is looking for—which, if accurate, is not a good look on Nawood’s part.
There might also be some significant Star Wars ties to this Skeleton Crew treasure hunt. It might have something to do with the long-gone warlord Xim the Despot. The trailer concludes with a huge structure that closely resembles Xim’s emblem. This implies that Xim the Despot may own the treasure they seek. Since Peridean runes of ur-Kittât have been seen in Ahsoka imagery, this treasure may also be related to the galaxy’s new history.
4. Pirates Are Pursuing Jude Law and the Children
The trailer depicts Jude Law and the kids being pursued and attacked by pirates, most likely because they start looking for riches. The trailer refers to “murderous pirates,” implying that they will serve as the group’s primary adversaries for the duration of the program. With most of the main arcs concerning piracy taking place off-screen, pirates have an intriguing past in Star Wars.
The Jedi and the Sith have always been the main characters in most Star Wars films and television series, despite pirates in series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In Star Wars novels, pirates have faced up against far more formidable opponents. Skeleton Crew may see a change in this. It’s also nice to see Jaleel White play a bad guy instead of the nerdy Urkel.
Whether Nawood is a Jedi or not, the trailer indicates that this crew must deal with pirates rather than other Force users.
5. The Skeleton Crew Will Feel Like They’re in the Eighties
Additionally, the Skeleton Crew trailer has a distinctly 1980s vibe, which is deliberate. According to starwars.com, Star Wars creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford cited 1980s films as their primary source of influence. Watts and Ford listed Predator (1987), Empire of the Sun (1987), and Flight of the Navigator (1986) as influences.
Peter Schilling’s song “Major Tom (Coming Home)” from the Skeleton Crew trailer is also from that same period. This is undoubtedly a fresh interpretation of Star Wars, and the outcome will be intriguing to watch. There is no denying that this new Skeleton Crew trailer resembles the hugely successful television series Stranger Things. Maybe this is just the fresh course that Star Wars needs now.
Plus, KB is wearing a visor similar to the one Geordi LaForge wore in the 80s classic Star Trek: The Next Generation.
6. A Favorite Clone Wars Arc Is Directly Related To Skeleton Crew
The plot of Skeleton Crew also resembles a beloved Clone Wars arc. In The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi Padawan, assists in rescuing a group of lost younglings. This story and the next Skeleton Crew plot line are directly related.
Many fans have speculated about the role of Hondo Ohnaka, an oddly beloved pirate extensively featured in The Clone Wars, especially in that story arc, due to this relationship to the show and its focus on pirates. This would undoubtedly make sense and appeal to a large number of viewers. We don’t know if Seaweed Face is there, but his chief minion, Vane, is one of the pirates.
While that is yet to be determined, this new trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew makes it very evident that Star Wars’ upcoming TV series has the potential to be an intriguing and genuinely unique addition to the franchise.
