This week, my brother and I will be reposting some of our favorite blog posts. This one was originally posted on 07/11/2010… Lindsay Lohan reports for prison to serve a 90 day sentence today. For all of her complaints of cruel and unusual punishment there are prisons worse than where she’s going. 1. Princess Leia’s Star Destroyer Prison Cell In Star Wars (A New Hope) Princess Leia is captured and taken aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer. There, she is held in a dark metal prison cell and tortured for information. It doesn’t get much worse when you have institutional torture droids working you over.…
This week, my brother and I will be reposting some of our favorite blog posts that didn’t get enough attention. This one was originally posted on 04/11/2011… When Lucas made the Star Wars prequel Attack of the Clones, he introduced us to a new character in the form of bounty hunter Boba Fett’s father. It turns out the apple fell far from the tree as he was the most worthless bounty hunter ever. 1. Jango Was a Moron – Jango is hired to kill Senator Amidala. Instead of shooting her in the head, he hires an assassin to do the job…
Most Star Wars fans agree that the fight between Darth Maul, Obi-Wan, and Qui-Gon was one of the few bright spots in The Phantom Menace. But this frame-by-frame analysis by First Man on the Spoon shows how they weren’t really fighting each other. “The Totally Phantom Menace” takes the form of an instructional video about how not to fight your opponent. It hilariously shows how their lightsabers never even came close to hitting anyone, all the unnecessary moves, and attack openings that were ignored. It seems like the real Phantom Menace was the lightsaber fight itself. Does this video make…
Long before Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Roddenberry attempted to revive the series with a feature film. The production was plagued with problems, many of which are described in a very extensive article at Whatculture. What I thought was most interesting was the story that was developed for the movie, titled Star Trek: Planet of the Titans. Here’s the summary: The Enterprise receives a distress signal from the USS DaVinci. By the time they reach the sector the distress signal originated, the USS DaVinci has disappeared. While the Enterprise investigates, Kirk is hit by an electromagnetic wave that causes him…
In my last post, I discussed how the basic premise of the Hulk changed radically during the first five issues. I saved the next two issues for their own post, because issue six alone is a doozy. For a moment, I’ll do a quick recap. My basic argument is that Stan Lee didn’t really know what to do with the Hulk when he first created him. That argument is supported by the fact that the whole premise changes wildly from issue to issue. It goes from Banner changing to a surprisingly articulate and ruthless Hulk at night, and back to…
Avatar was a groundbreaking movie for the film industry, for movie-goers, and for theaters. But in all the hype, one group was ignored. Today’s video talks about the much-beloved “enhance button.” TVtropes has a great summary and explanation: A staple of any crime drama, the “Enhance” button on the computer is able to turn a tiny, blurred, grainy image in a photo or video into a clear, unmistakable piece of evidence. This process is virtually instantaneous unless added dramatic tension is required (in which case extra Techno Babble or more Applied Phlebotinum may be needed). May require someone to stand next to the computer intoning “Enhance…. enhance…” for full effect. Now there are real techniques that vaguely fit under the category of “image…

The Doomsday Machine is one of the classic episodes of the original Star Trek series. But there’s one person who was disappointed with it, and that’s Norman Spinrad, the author of the screenplay. Turns out he had a very different vision for the titular spacecraft: “The original idea, which was complicated, is maybe a machine, but it’s maybe an artificial organism, to serve the same purpose,” said Spinrad. “Then you have the question, ‘When does an artificial organism become a machine and when does a machine become an artificial organism?’ The thing I had in my head was not like…

Chris Pine, Captain Kirk from the Star Trek (2009) movie, was on Jimmy Kimmel Live and mentioned his boyhood crush for Kristy Swanson from the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you had to call your childhood celebrity crush, who would it be? [Image Source: geektwins]
Okay, there’s been a lot of buzz around the Internet about a group who calculated the cost of building the Death Star. Based on 2012 prices for steel, they estimated the Death Star would cost $852,000,000,000,000,000. While it’s all very interesting and cool, the basic assumption on which the entire exercise is founded is wrong. The whole calculation is based on the premise that the Death Star is made of steel. This is a highly advanced technological world we’re talking about. The idea that they would build the Death Star out of ordinary steel is like Jules Verne assuming we…
There’s a Internet rule called Rule 63 that states that for every character, there’s a version of the opposite gender. In other words, people like to turn male characters into women, and vice versa. The latest example of that is a group of cosplayers who decided to portay the Justice League with their genders swapped. The results were pretty cool, so cool that artist Yasmin Liang drew a comic version. So apparently there’s a YouTube series called “Hot in the Kitchen LA” (not to be confused with “Hot in the Kichen”) where a beautiful woman named Luz with an extremely thick accent prepares vaguely food-like items that gives us an excuse to watch her. And apparently, they did an episode where she prepares a hero sandwich. And apparently she decided to dress up in a Wonder Woman-type outfit, because, you know…hero? Superhero? And I’m sure it wasn’t intentional, but the sight of Wonder Woman in the kitchen making a sandwich is just too sexist for words. Which is hilarious. Next…
If you’ve seen the movie Primer, then you know it’s a stunning but confusing film about time travel, friendship, and the corruption of power. While it’s an incredible movie, it does leave a lot of unanswered questions. In doing some research on it, I discovered that the background of the movie is almost as interesting as the movie itself. Here are 10 little bits of trivia you probably didn’t know about this awesome movie. 1. No Time Machine – The phrase “time machine” is never stated in the movie. The time machine is always simply referred to as “the box.”…
One of Stan Lee’s most popular and enduring creations is The Incredible Hulk. The idea of being able to unleash your anger by transforming into a super-strong powerhouse is a great revenge fantasy. Stan Lee gets a lot of credit for conceiving of such a brilliant concept that taps into a collective idea. The Gray Hulk’s first words The truth, though, is that most people have never read the Incredible Hulk series from the beginning. I happened to get a digital collection of Hulk and was surprised by his original incarnation. In fact, after reading several issues, I came to…

You know what I thought when I saw this commercial from 1978 for the first official lightsaber toy? “I’m a grumpy old Star Wars fan! I don’t like things the way they are compared to the way they used to be! These kids today with their newfangled lightsaber toys! In my day, we had a flashlight with a balloon on it! Nathan Fillion, who played Captain Mal Reynolds on the scif-fi/western series Firefly, has a new show called Castle about a writer who helps cops solve mysteries. To be honest, I’ve never seen it, because it’s not sci-fi, but this clip makes me wish I had. Castle has apparently honored Fillion’s old show quite a few times, but this one is the best and most blatant. In season two, during the Halloween episode “Vampire Weekend,” Castle dressed up in a very familiar costume. Of all the changes to the Star Wars films, the one that gets cited most often is having Greedo shoot at Han Solo first. It seems ridiculous. We all saw Han shoot Greedo, and it was pretty cool really. Then, in the 1997 “Special Edition,” effects were added to make it seem as if Greedo shot at Solo and he shot back. If you’ve never seen it, or don’t remember it, you can watch the video comparison below. Fans were outraged and insisted it’s wrong. There’s a whole Wikipedia article devoted to the topic. Unfortunately, the evidence sides against Lucas on this…
Robot Chicken has released their third parody special of Star Wars. As for Star Trek…oh, wait, there isn’t one. Let’s face facts. Star Wars is inherently funnier than Star Trek. Here’s seven reasons why. 1. Star Wars is Goofier – There’s more comedy gold in just one of the Star Wars movies than an entire season of Trek, simply because SW gets into some crazy situations. When a grown man looks into the eyes of a giant slug named Jabba without a trace of irony, that’s funny. Even when Star Trek tries to be funny, it’s usually as a result…

While human beings are clearly the most intelligent species on the planet, the idea of another species as smart or even smarter than us has always had an appeal. At the same time, apes are so close to us in appearance that it’s only natural to imagine them copying our intellect. Here are seven of the smartest fictional apes in movies, television, and comic books. 7. Ape (George of the Jungle) In the cartoon as well as the movie, tree-swinging hero George is assisted by an ape vastly smarter than him, known only as Ape. It’s played for comedy, but…
