Following the untimely death of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel Studios announced that it would not recast the role. However, executives appear to have changed their minds more than four years later.
Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider claims that Marvel Studios is now looking for a new actor to portray T’Challa in upcoming motion pictures. “With Marvel reshuffling the deck in advance of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and Robert Downey Jr. coming back, not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom, I’m told that the door is firmly open for T’Challa to be recast via the magic of the multiverse,” he told The Direct.
“I heard that an actor was actually offered the role this past fall, a couple of months after Downey’s big reveal at Comic-Con, but they turned it down, not wanting to jeopardize their career momentum by stepping into Boseman’s gigantic shoes, which may be too big to fill, even for Hollywood’s most talented Black actors,” he said. Sneider thinks the recently cast T’Challa will play a role in Black Panther 3, while it’s still uncertain if the character will be in the following Avengers films.
In Captain America: Civil War (2016), Boseman debuted as Black Panther. Alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis, he was the leading cast member of Black Panther two years later. The narrative centers on T’Challa, who returns to Wakanda to assume his rightful throne following the passing of his father. However, Killmonger (Jordan) challenges him.
The film was a huge success, taking home three Academy Awards and more than $1.3 billion worldwide box office. On August 28, 2020, Boseman tragically lost his fight with cancer. In the second movie, T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, takes over as the new Black Panther. Wakanda Forever’s success prompted the announcement of a third movie in late 2024. Before his tenure with Marvel ends, the project is being led by longtime studio executive Nate Moore. Moore is leaving because he wants to concentrate on making non-Marvel films.
“Nate is a fantastic executive and colleague as well as a wonderful friend to all of us here at Marvel Studios,” they said. “Although we’ll miss him a great deal, we look forward to watching what he does next while also having the good fortune of working with him in a new way on our next Black Panther movie.”
We’ve already explained why recasting Chadwick Boseman should happen. So this is excellent news.
There is no release date for Black Panther 3, but we know Denzel Washington will play a role.
