Ten years after its debut, Interstellar is still showing up in newer and bigger blockbusters. Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi classic earned an additional $1.11 million on Wednesday from just 165 locations, representing a surprising 5% rise over the day before. The entire domestic re-issue revenue is now a fantastic $7.83 million, with the domestic total getting agonizingly close to $200 million, now hitting $195.85 million. And, with the film now playing for a third week in IMAX theaters after just being released for one week, it may shoot for the stars and reach the domestic box office milestone.
Given that the film has been competing for space in IMAX cinemas with three blockbusters in Moana 2, Wicked, and Gladiator II, IMAX’s decision to prioritize the older film based on sales is extraordinary. Over the weekend, ten IMAX 70mm venues sold out completely, adding $702,000 to the coffers and a genuinely eye-watering $70,000 per screen average. Nolan expressed his delight at the film’s rediscovered love ten years later.
“In the years since Interstellar was released, many people have asked me when they might have the chance to see it on an IMAX screen, and I was thrilled so many moviegoers took advantage of the original IMAX experience of Interstellar this weekend,” Nolan said in a statement.
