The Gifted – Lorna Dane / Polaris (Emma Dumont) |
One “The Gifted” cast member says Magneto is the “entire reason” for the season finale. In the comics, Lorna is the biological daughter of infamous X-Men villain Magneto the master of magnetism.
Although he’s been played by Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen in the movies, he hasn’t appeared on the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emma Dumont who plays Lorna, aka Polaris, said he’s still impacting the show.
“Magneto is the entire reason for the last two episodes. He is it even though he’s never mentioned by name and we never see him,” says Dumont. The two-hour season finale episodes “eXtraction” and X-roads” air tonight. The official synopsis reads “Dr. Campbell attends an anti-mutant summit, attempting to take the Hound program national, and some of the team at Mutant HQ goes on a dangerous mission to stop his efforts. Polaris learns more about her past and makes a crucial decision that could have impactful consequences. Meanwhile, the Mutant HQ comes under attack and, with everything to lose, relationships are put to the test and alliances shift in the all-new ‘eXtraction/X-roads’ special, two-hour season finale episode of THE GIFTED airing Monday, January 15th on FOX.”
“The truth is that they’re exactly the same and she has the exact same beliefs as him. So, she basically needs to decide if she’s going to own it. Is she going to step up and try to fight fire and save mutants, or is she going to back down and sort of be passive about it?” says Dumont, adding that the episode really delves into Polaris’ backstory. “We know the Polaris we see now, but we don’t really know Polaris in the past. We really get to see her as a younger woman, like really reluctant to be a leader and doesn’t really want people to look up to her – maybe even more insecure than we’ve seen before.”
Besides the Magneto reveals Dumont is also excited about the full extent of her powers. Dumont teases, “Let’s just say she does something very difficult and tricky that she’s never done before.”
The Gifted two-hour finale airs tonight Monday, Jan. 15 at 8/7c on Fox.
