The new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer reveals big things coming from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Warning: Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame & Spider-man: Far From Home
Kevin Feige promised big changes to the MCU in “Phase 4” and the new trailer confirms it. Spider-Man: Far From Home introduces the new hero Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) to the MCU. But the new trailer for the Spider-Man sequel shows this classic Marvel villain may have a different origin than his comic book counterpart.
The three-minute trailer, released Monday, shows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) grieving the loss of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). In Endgame Iron Man died at the end of the movie using the Infinity Gauntlet. Parker tells police officers that he’s going on vacation with his friends. Apparently, Ned (Jacob Batalon), Michelle “MJ” Jones (Zendaya) and Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) were all recovered since they’re are all the same age after five years.
Parker is avoiding a phone call from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). But Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) recruit Parker from his European trip and introduce him to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) who Fury says is from another Earth in a different dimension.
When Nick Fury recruits Spider-Man during European vacation and introduces the wall-crawler to Quentin Beck/Mysterio, the newcomer tells Peter Parker they could “use someone like” him on their world.
Spider-Man is confused and Nick Fury tells them Quentin Beck is from an alternate Earth, explaining “the snap tore a hole in our dimension.” Spider-Man says, “you’re saying there’s a multiverse?” Fury doesn’t explain if the “snap” refers to when Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet, Banner’s snap or Iron Man’s snap.
The latest MCU movie follows Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame after they traveled back in time to collect the Infinity Stones and reverse what Thanos had done. Based on the comments in the movie, and comments from the director’s, fans began to speculate the new snap created alternate universes that branch off from the point where they took the Infinity Stones. It looks like Spider-Man: Far From Home takes it even further.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said he likes the multiple meanings behind the name, telling ComicBook.com: “It ties into Homecoming, not just keeping that word going, which we like and we liked it more than Homecoming 2, but that notion of ‘home’ is a word that has dual meanings we’d like to continue with this [MCU] version of Spider-Man. So, Far From Home has multiple meanings.”
Co-director Joe Russo revealed to EW that Ned and the other classmates disappeared in the snap. “So… Ned disappeared as well,” Joe Russo tells EW. “That’s the two of them seeing each other for the first time after having disappeared.”
So there are two big reveals in the trailer: Mysterio isn’t a villain. The MCU has multiple universes and
