Recap Stranger Things (2025): S5E02 – “Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Nancy Wheeler”
The Demogorgon Attacks the Wheelers
The episode begins right where the premiere left off, plunging the audience into a terrifying yet energetic action sequence at the Wheeler home, ironically set to the upbeat sound of ABBA’s “Fernando.” A Demogorgon is on the attack, forcing Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) and young Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) to hide. Though Ted Wheeler (Joe Chrest) attempts a brief intervention with a golf club, the creature prevails. Karen is severely wounded, and the Demogorgon, which created a new portal to enter the house, escapes back into the Upside Down, taking Holly with it. Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Eleven arrive moments later to find Karen injured and Holly gone. Without a moment’s hesitation, Eleven impulsively jumps through the open portal to pursue the kidnapper and save Holly. Karen and Ted are rushed to the hospital, where he is reported to be in a coma, and she requires surgery. Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) express guilt over their family being targeted, while Lucas notes the disturbing parallel between Holly’s vanishing and Will’s original disappearance.
Eleven’s Impulse and the Upside Down Journey
In the Upside Down, Eleven/Jane Hopper (Millie Bobby Brown) quickly finds Jim Hopper (David Harbour). Hopper is frustrated by her impulsive decision to charge into the other dimension without a plan. Nevertheless, they work together, following the blood trail left by the wounded Demogorgon, which Eleven believes will lead them to Holly. During a brief stop to tend to Hopper’s wounds, he opens up about his deceased daughter, Sarah, expressing his deep fear of losing Eleven as well. Their journey leads them to a massive, inexplicable wall-like structure. Nearby, they discover one of Holly’s shoes, prompting Eleven to speculate that this colossal boundary somehow took the missing girl.
Will Byers: Vecna’s Receiver
Back in the normal world, at the radio station, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) confides in Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) about a new, more profound vision. He explains that he wasn’t just seeing through the Demogorgon’s eyes, but was actually thinking through its mind, indicating that he was never truly severed from the Hive Mind. Will believes the connection merely went dormant in California and returned when they came back to Hawkins. Robin overhears and suggests a critical theory: Will is functioning as a “receiver” or “antenna” for Vecna, which could be the key to locating Holly. Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), however, insists he must not endanger himself.
Hospital Intrusion and the Search for Answers
Subplots continue, including the lingering love triangle tension between Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve, and Steve and Dustin getting into an argument. Meanwhile, Mike and Nancy, consumed by the need to prevent any more harm, agree that they must find out the true identity of Holly’s so-called “imaginary friend,” Mr. Whatsit. Unable to convince the hospital staff to let them see their mother, Mike and Nancy devise a plan: Mike dresses in a patient gown, and Nancy poses as a candy striper to sneak into Karen’s room. Though Karen is too injured to speak, she communicates by writing in a notebook, revealing that Mr. Whatsit wears a hat and a pocket watch, and his name is Henry.
The True Identity of Mr. Whatsit
The episode then delivers its major reveal. A subsequent scene confirms that “Mr. Whatsit” is, in fact, Henry, also known as One, a.k.a. Vecna, who is shown taking Holly to the dreaded Creel House. The episode’s cliffhanger comes when Robin and Will, having snuck out of the radio station, follow clues from Will’s vision. They discover rocks arranged in a spiral at the spot where Will had his vision, which leads them to Holly’s elementary school playground. As they watch the children play, Will realizes that he was seeing the scene through Vecna’s eyes, meaning the school children are the next targets and are in immediate peril.
Overall: Watch Stranger Things (2025): S5E02 – “Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Nancy Wheeler”
Watch the Stranger Things episode “Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Nancy Wheeler” because it’s another impactful episode leading to the conclusion.
This is yet another excellent episode. The only thing that bothers me about it is that, although the plot is meant to progress for each group, it becomes a little uneven in the middle. The love triangle and the argument between Steve and Dustin are two examples of subplots that aren’t as compelling and seem a little forced. Even Hopper talking about Sarah feels a little pointless, given what we’ve already heard. However, when this episode is excellent, it’s extremely good. The opening action scene is fantastic, and it’s really exciting to watch the Mr. Whatsit mystery unfold.
I’m giving this episode 4 out of 5 stars.
