Sonic 3 has only recently hit theaters, but we already know when the next one will be released.
According to Variety, Paramount is enjoying the positive reviews for the most recent addition to the series by stating that Sonic 4 is already in the works. It is still uncertain (although presumably very likely) whether Jeff Fowler, who has directed all of the Sonic films to date, will return for Sonic 4, which is set to be released in 2027. The news comes as Sonic 3—which had a series-high Rotten Tomatoes score of 86% when reviews were released earlier this week—is predicted to gross $55-60 million in its debut weekend in the United States.
While exact plot details for a fourth Sonic film are being kept under wraps for the time being, no one familiar with the films should be surprised that the third is already hinting at even more video game characters making their way to the big screen, following the original set up bringing Tails (and eventually Idris Elba’s Knuckles) into the sequel. Sonic 2 is paving the way for Shadow’s significant role in Sonic 3.
“It’s fun to see the fan debates online about who’s coming up next, who’s going to be teased at the end of the film. We have a lot of the same conversations,” Fowler told Entertainment Weekly. “We’ve all got our favorites on the filmmaking side, and we’re all making great cases for ‘it should be this one or that one.’ It is fun to keep that anticipation. This movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 includes two post-credit scenes, both of which set up future stories, so this revelation was probably inevitable, but it’s still kind of the studio to make it official before the newest film’s release.
Sonic 3 hits theaters today, December 20, so we won’t have to wait long to find out who Sonic and his friends will face off against next.
