James Cameron Says Michelle Yeoh Won’t Appear in Avatar Until at Least 2029

Even before winning the Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Michelle Yeoh was experiencing a surge in her career. Fortunately for us, that won’t be ending anytime soon. The live-action miniseries Blade Runner 2099 on Prime Video is currently in production; Star Trek: Section 31 will debut on Paramount+ early in the following year, and Yeoh’s involvement in James Cameron’s highly anticipated Avatar franchise is not as imminent as we initially believed.

This is because Yeoh’s role will not truly be shown in the third movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which was just officially announced as the title. Rather, she will make her screen debut in the fourth movie, scheduled for release in 2029—ten years after being cast as Dr. Karina Mogue, the scientist.

James Cameron, personally, verified this information for Entertainment Weekly during the D23 event. He stated that Yeoh would be in parts four and five but not in part three, saying that “that got a little bit misreported.”

Yeoh was rumored to feature in the film when late producer Jon Landau shared a picture of the actor during the production of the third “Avatar” movie in 2021. (Cameron filming “Fire and Ash” and portions of “Avatar 4” in tandem with “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022.)

“She will be coming in soon to do her part, which is an interesting, fun character,” Cameron said. “I mean, we’re getting ahead of ourselves now. This whole thing has been planned for years and years. The scripts were all written years ago, through the end of movie five. So we’ve been working on parts of four even as we go along, mostly because we’ve got this young cast. We had to shoot them all while they were still young.”

Because of those quickly aging youthful stars, the EW piece says, a widely distributed photo of Yeoh on-site with Cameron was taken during Avatar’s back-to-back filming of its second and third chapters and the early portion of its fourth. Although Yeoh won’t be in Fire and Ash, Cameron is confident that seeing her in the universe of Avatar will be worth the wait. “We love Michelle…” he said. “She was always a movie star, but she’s blown up into a huge, huge phenomenon.”

So is Yeoh’s character a good or bad guy? According to a comment by James Cameron, in Avatar 3, we will see a change from what we have seen thus far, which is good Na’vi and bad humans.

Pandora now has a different objective. It serves as more than just a strip mine these days. Earth is dying, thus humans will have to relocate there forever. Additionally, the Quaritch brand of “sledgehammer violence” against the Na’vi has twice failed miserably.

Given what Cameron said, the failures of the RDA, and the actual, pressing need to relocate people as quickly as possible, I could imagine fresh leadership for the human colonization effort—possibly from the UN or several governments—taking over from the ruthless corporate RDA.

If nothing else, I could envision this new group trying to peacefully resolve the issue to prevent Eywa from attacking others. Therefore, I could picture Michelle Yeoh playing a UN physician who is trying to find a way for both humans and Na’vi to coexist there.

These “better behaved” humans won’t win the Na’vi over right away. However, in light of JC’s remark, Jake and Neyteri will face greater internal difficulties, most likely from a faction of Na’vi who are seeking conquest. I’m not sure if these will be the Ash folks or not. However, if there are “bad” Na’vi in Avatar 3, they’ll probably be aggressive and disruptive, which could lead Team Sully and their tribes into danger. We’ll see.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will premiere in US theaters on December 19, 2025.

Are you looking forward to Michelle Yeoh in Avatar?
